"The underwear doesn't save us. Baptism saves us. The underwear, if we honor it, just exalts us." ~ J the Mormon apologist.
If you want to see the original quote go to my question list. This is the 4rh time I've tried to post this. It doesn't seem to get past the Y!A censcrs. One of them must be Mormon.

It's not the underwear (refered to in the Mormon Church as "temple garments," because a Mormon wears them only after having gone through a Mormon temple for the first time) that saves or exalts us. It's what they represent that can bring exaltation, IF we remain obedient to God's commandments. They serve as a physical representation of covenants with God we make in the temple (kinda the same overall purpose as Jewish circumcision does).
And as a side note to MistyAnn's comments - the street goes both ways here. Men also cannot be exalted and gain the opportunity to enter the Celestial Kingdom without having been married and sealed to their wife in the temple, and he must have been righteous in mortality (including having been a good husband who supports, loves and honors his wife) or he will lose all blessings, including that of eternal marriage. Read Matthew 22:23-33, which actually refers to the concept of eternal marriage (after all, why ask that kind of question if marriage was only until death?).

The Mormon women are saved, exalted through their husbands. She must be married and sealed to him, or she will not enter into the Mormon Heaven. I've heard Mormons say that the husband will call his wife from the grave and take her to meet God.
Mormon Apostle Erastus Snow had this to say on the matter:
"Do the women, when they pray, remember their husbands?... Do you uphold your husband before God as your lord? "What!—my husband to be my lord?" I ask, Can you get into the celestial kingdom without him? Have any of you been there? You will remember that you never got into the celestial kingdom [during the temple ceremony] without the aid of your husband. If you did, it was because your husband was away, and some one had to act proxy for him. No woman will get into the celestial kingdom, except her husband receives her, if she is worthy to have a husband; and if not, somebody will receive her as a servant." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p. 291)
I don't know want other Christian think about this doctrine, to me it sounds a lot like blaspheme.

That is very weird. I'm 7th generation LdS and I've never heard that the temple garments exalt us.
Indeed, if you go to the writings of the General Authorities (such as the Apostles and the Prophet) you will realize that the garments act as a physical reminder of the covenants we make in the temple. There is nothing magical or mystical about them.

I'm Mormon. I'll give my two cents, but I won't try to explain what J the Mormon apologist said.
First it doesn't save us. We can and do take it off while in the shower, when in a swimming pool, for certain doctor's visits, that kind of thing. But we are commanded to wear it always.
As much as we honor it, and more importantly what it represents, then we will be protected in that we will notice for example that we don't have to worry about being immodestly dressed. And there are certain feelings of protection that come with being modestly dressed in today's world. When we honor it and what it represents to us our minds are more focused on the truely important things in life, and not on the flipant, non-important gossip on the latest rich Hollywood type to go into rehab. In order to qualify for wearing it, and therfore obtaining it, we have to go through an interview process in which we are asked questions similar to Do you strive to obey the commandments of God? Do you sustain your church leaders? Do you live the Word of Wisdom? Do you honor the priesthood? The interview process is about how we live, and do we walk the walk as well as talk the talk, or do we just try to coast through life doing the bare minimum? After having gone through all of that as well as what occurs in the temple, the garment (as we call it) serves as a reminder of what we have covenanted with God to do, and not do. And to the extent that we honor those covenants, it can lead us, individually towards exaltation. But just because I wear it, doesn't mean that I believe I'm exalted.
I also take issue with the word "saves" but I'll save that for another time and another question.

Yeah, Andy H is cool! Seriously, people believe this, and we must therefore take it seriously. This does not mean giving it credibility. I have heard of something similar from a Catholic sect...something called a scapular.
No piece of clothing can bring glory, honor or blessing. It's just common sense.

I have heard that Mormons believe they can't be hurt when wearing it. As if it were some kind of protection. I have heard that they hang it around their ankle and hold it outside of the tub while they shower and then switch feet so not to take it off. They need Jesus.
