It depends on what kinds of pets they are, how well you take care of them and how much space and time you have for them.

If you live in a city or town, check with Animal Control or the local Humane Society to find out how many pets you are legally allowed to have. Our town only allows 3 pets per household, so I moved to the country and got more (seven dogs, two rats).
Have as many pets as you can afford to love, feed and care for. They really need us. Please consider adoption from an animal shelter before going to a pet store.
Remember that food is not the only expense! Regular vet checks can really add up, and emergencies can break the bank.

You should find out how many pets you can have in your hometown. At my hometown I can only have up to 3 cats and 3 dogs but I can't have a combination of each. I'm even not allowed to have pit bulls.

However many you can properly take care. Everybody has their own limit--I know people with 30+ pets, but I personally don't think I could take on any more than 10 total.

To care for a pet, you must provide love, playtime, food, water, shelter, and medical care. If your resources are adequate, your compassion is boundless, and your time is limitless, then have as many pets as you like. Just take care of the ones you have. The world needs lots of good pet owners.

It depends on the size of your living space and the type of pet. Also, it depends on how much care they will need and how much attention you are willing to spend. Different animals - and breeds within animal categories - require different space, attention, etc... You'll have to research each you are interested in to see if they are a good fit for you and your current situation.
