I think that that is a great color, but with dark grey carpet it might not be to dark. Maybe that color and have some light colored furniture or paintings on the walls. Good luck and have fun redecorating. It is always fun, just go wild with it. As long as you like it, that is all that matters. They will not be living there.

Gray is a hard color to work with as it isn't a major color in design right now. But there are ton's of things you can do to make your house a home. First if you SO wants tan or beige they both go great with the blue you are looking at. Right now brown and blue are a great combo. Remember that the formula for balance in color is 60, 40,10, 60% of your main color, 40% of the secondary color and 10% of an accent color. So start with the deep blue walls with the tan on the the upholstery and possably soft green as an accent color, in pillows and items around the room. Also if you want to warm up the room try finding a rug that has all the colors don't worry if there are colors that aren't part of your palet, and put it down over the gray carpet. Try going to www.Smithe.com and using the room planner to do some space planing. Remember that you need three feet in your major traffic patterns. Also buy a quart of your wall color and try it out first. Buy sofa first as paint can be matched to anything and you many not care if the color is slightly more red or yellow. Keep in mind the web site you sent met had several shades of blue so you have room in your color choice. Lastly put in things you love photos, items from your travles things that have meaning to you. Thouse are the things that help make you home yours. If you are looking for ideas buy some shelter magizines such as Veranda, or Ell Decor. Tear out the pages and put them in a file after a while you will start to see your own personal style.
Good luck.

Tan and beige doesn't go too well with a dark grey carpet so those colors won't work. Bring home paint color chip cards and see what works best against the carpet as well as the light during the day and night. Whatever color you decide on will impact everything you put into the room so be sure it will go with what you have unless you are buying new.

Dark gray like a cat or dark gray like a chalkboard?
Smoke or steel blue sounds good - get paint samples and hang up in the room so you can see which shade is best.
Pick out your favorite color, her favorite color, and a third you can both live with.
I don't think tan will go with gray carpet - neither will oranges, golds, or most browns.
Off-white, icy pastels, [ icy pink, yellow, green, aqua, blue, and violet ] will go, and so will most blues, pinky reds, purples, and most blue-greens.

try a backdrop. its when you paint the wall that you see when you walk into a room. paint that a bright fun color and leave the rest of the walls white. then you can experiment with patterns that are similar to the color of your backdrop!
