Depends alot on the officer. I've seen some amazing cops that have pulled arrests from guys I wouldn't even have run on a traffic stop. Other cops, well... dont quite have that gift.
This is a subjective question, generally we do our jobs well, in a professional manner. We're not perfect, and screw up from time to time. My point of view is this, I've never made a bad arrest, I've never violated anyones rights, and I've never used excessive force. I can't control the actions of every other cop in the world, but I can definately control my own - and that's the most important thing.

Any crime can be solved, it's simply a matter of resources. No community can afford to pour enough time/money/man power into an investigation for something that is small. That is why larger crimes get solved and some smaller ones don't.

I think police officers are, for the most part, very intelligent and observant. I'm sorry, but being able to commit a crime without being detected does not make you smarter than the police.

I used to think the same thing until I became a cop. Thats when I found out that intelligent people don't commit the crimes. Its the completely brain dead drug addicts and morons that do. They make it easy to catch them. When a "smart"er criminal arrives, it takes a little more of our resources to find him, but eventually he'll be caught.

True Blue has it right.
It varies across the board. Some of us are very good officers, others couldn't find their butt with both hands and a flashlight, and others are average.

Look into the concept of community policing. No its not a citizens watch group.
Lots of people have the same outlook on life, they are called criminals.
