I live in Aus and have been to NZ and recommend both.

If you want to do Australia, September is just the beginning of Spring, so if you want to go swimming, rule out Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Just south of Brisbane (45 mins) in the state of Queensland is a place called the Gold Coast. It is a beachside city of 500,000 residents and 10 million visitors per year with sky scrapers, miles of golden beaches, gorgeous hinterland (waterfalls, hiking trails, valleys), funky dining, vibrant nightlife, modern accommodation and luxury (the Palazzo Versace is here). The Gold Coast also has it's own airport (Coolangatta), but you can also use the Brisbane one and catch a shuttle bus. People come from near and far to go shopping - Pacific Fair (shopping mecca), Harbour Town (outlet shopping), Marina Mirage (prestige designer shopping) and much more.

Cairns will be great at that time of year for snorkelling the reef, and Ooleroo (formerly Ayers Rock) - fly into Alice Springs - is the Red centre of Australia and that whole "Outback" thing.

If you go to NZ, I highly recommend the south Island. Queenstown or Wanaka are breath taking. The lakes are irredescent blue, the mountains will still have snow on them (dress very warm!). The food there is amazing and there are gorgeous wineries. You can take a steam ship across the lake to this old homestead where you have an amazing meal and a cool farm show. The have a LUGE that you can ride down one of the mountains with glorious views. You can ride the sky monorail up to a restaurant overlooking all of Queenstown and the lake. You'll still be able to ski there then too. Queenstown has it's own airport, but not alot of flights go there (you might be lucky). You can also fly into Christchurch airport and hire a car and go for about a four hour drive, or take a connecting flight directly from there to queenstown. Have an awesome holiday.

I'm an Aussie and live in Brisbane as I have lived in Brisbane my whole life I can't really say how safe the rest of Australia is but Brisbane is a safe place to live there are many safe suburbs but as every country there is some suburbs that is not that safe. All in all Australia is a safe place to live your best option is to do some research on both OZ and NZ to find the safe suburbs and the suburbs to avoid. Weather wise Brisbane does get hot in the summer most of the time the temperatures are in the low to mid 30's occasionally it might get around 37-38 and if it gets really hot it can reach 40 but that is rare the last time it was 40 in Brisbane was about 2-3 years ago our minimum temperature in the summer is in the mid 20's so a typical summer's day would be 24-32 with high humidity which make it feel even hotter Winter wise it does not get that cold most winter day maximums are in the low 20's to mid 20's a typical winter day temperature is 8-20 some times it reaches 18 degrees that is what we call a freezing day in Brisbane Hope this is helpful and makes sense

Australia is a big place, bigger than the USA. there is a lot to see and you won't see much in a week. You could easily spend a week in Sydney with trips to the Blue Mountains and, perhaps, a day trip to Canberra. You could fly to Cairns and spend a week exploring the tropical nrth with the Great Barrier Reef, the Atherton Tablelands, the Daintree Rain Forest and Cape Tribulation. You could go to Darwin and explore the local area with two or three days in Kakadu National Park. Or fly to Alice Springs and explore the red centre and Uluru. Or go to Perth and explore southwest Western Australia with its wineries and scenery. Or go to tasmania and spend a week driving round this beautiful island. Or head for Melbourne, or Adelaide, or Brisbane - or anywhere. If you are here in September, the Birdsville Races are on the first weekend.

Everyone's raving about Sydney, but I think you can never really know what Australia is like unless you go around the suburbs or visit the rural places. I once visited the Manning Valley and loved the laid back atmosphere of the area. It had a rich art culture and warm people, picturesque places. Had a great time staying at Cundle Motel - you can check out http://www.motorlodge.com.au

It was near the places I wanted to see there.
