"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair; or gold pearls, or costly array;

"But which becometh women professing godliness with good works." 1 Timothy 2:9, 10

Society then as now seems to have pressured women to dress as sex objects, as though value or worth were determined by the ability to stimulate males sexually. This was as demeaning to women then as it is now.

Maybe this will help a little:

(NIV) 1Timothy 2:9-10

9-And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.

10-For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.

Now you really need to read verses 11-15 also, if you are going to study and live as a Biblical woman. You can not take part and leave the other part out.

I hope this helps.

The scripture goes on to mention the cultivation of "the secret person of the heart."

Paul was not forbidding jewelry, makeup or hairstyles- he was admonishing Christian women to place emphasis on becoming moral and righteous women in the congregation. As with all people, it is what is on the inside, not the outside that counts.

Additionally, the congregations of Paul's day were surrounded by the pagan cultures of other nations, and it is possible that an immodest woman, or prostitute, could be identified by a certain hairstyle. A Christian woman would most certainly not want to be associated with that type of lifestyle, so she would avoid any dress or grooming habits that might be questionable.

9-10 In v. 8 Paul desires that men pray; in v. 9 he has some instructions for women and how they should conduct themselves in church services.
First, they are to "dress modestly." An expansion of the phrase used here is: "adorn themselves in modest clothes." This remains a much needed admonition today. "Decency" (GK G133) suggests a modesty that does not overstep the limits of womanly reserve. This should apply to both dress and deportment, although the rest of the verse suggests that the primary reference here is to one's clothing. Women are also to dress with "propriety" (GK G5408), a word that suggests good judgment. Paul hints at the snare of participating in the extreme forms of current fashions.
"Braided hair" means hair that is woven or braided (cf. 1Pe 3:3). The Christian woman is not to adorn herself with "gold or pearls or expensive clothes" so as to draw attention to herself. At worst, this is what the prostitutes did. At best, it shows pride and self-centeredness, both of which are contrary to the spirit of Christ. Such dress is especially unbecoming in church. Rather, Christian women are to adorn themselves "with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God." We must express our faith through good deeds. This thought is more dominant in the Pastoral Letters than in Paul's earlier letters--perhaps because the need for such emphasis was more apparent.

otherwise we should be more concerened about our innerself our spiritual self besides our outward apperance. , however that said we should be modest with our clothing because we are Gods children, Any sound minded respectable christain woman will dress accordingly & modestly, like nice jeans or pants, or if wearing shorts those that do not show butt-cheeks or daisy duke shorts,or nice dresses with panyhose underneath or a slip, with a descent top;but this passage is referring to the innerself how we should focus on that instead of like braiding your hair or flashy accessories.

This is Gods' Word for those who are really born again Christians who keep on learning and growing in the knowledge of God. But if you are not, you just happen to read the Bible just for the sake of curiosity and to be able to raise question, then forget it. It does not applies to you. Why should we intrude individual human rights?
But if you are serious in Gods' Word Rightly-Divided (2 Timothy 2:15) then keep on reading and growing but first of all, you have to recieve Christ Jesus as your Lord God and Saviour, and be counted in the family of God.

It means that women are to adorn [dress with modesty. To be respectful of herself and others. It doesn't mean that a woman can't wear braids or jewelery or nice clothes......just be tasteful and not try to draw un-needed attention to oneself.

Inner beauty is a virtue that God approves of.

Women (and even men if you read further) should present themselves in a respectable manner. We shouldnt try to look rich or gaudy, just respectable.
