No she is not being a good christian at all. If she were truly a good christian she would be more Christ like instead of a judging prune. The only thing she would have accomplished in this situation was that she probably drove them away from Christ as well as other people who would have witnessed this spectacle.
P.S. I guess if according to this woman that you have to be a good christian to be a godparent, then based on this criteria she could never be a godparent.

Well, the whole point of being a godparent is to care for the child should the parents die while the kid is young. Godparents were developed by Christians so that the child of a Christian parent would be raised by fellow Christians so the child would grow up, be a Christian, have Christian children, etc. Christians are all about the more the merrier. So... since these people are obviously not Christians, they shouldn't be surprised that they will not be godparents. And, they should have laughed in the mother's face because they are better than that and then told her just to shut up. A woman like that has issues and you shouldn't take is personally. Just remember your religion works for you.

well, I certainly don't think that the MIL has any business "berating" the son and the son's wife, but the MIL may have a point underneath her rant, which is that godparents in many Christian denominations are supposed to help their godchildren grow in Christian faith, and it's hard to know how one could do this if one were not oneself Christian. In the infant baptism ceremonies I've attended, the godparents often have to get up there with the parents and baby and promise the minister that they will "reinforce" the child's Christian upbringing.

Some Christians make the rest of us look bad. A family fight in a public restaurant is classless for anyone---Christian or not. It is traditional that a godparent will take custody of a child and raise the child in a Christian home if the parents die or become somehow unable to care for the child, but this subject is best decided calmly, privately, and berating someone for their beliefs or lack thereof never, ever works.

I will put aside how I feel about baptizing an infant and answer your question from you mother in laws point of view.
A godparent, by tradition is vowing (promising) to be responsible for the spiritual upbringing of the child in question.
How could you even want to be a godparent if you do not believe in the same way of worship if you believe anything at all?
It would have been a more polite letdown for your mother in law to tell you that you must have the same belief system in order to promise to be responsible for the childs religious upbringing, but the result is the same.
Now, with all that said, the bible states that we must be baptized after we see the light and believe in and submit to following the teachings of Jesus Christ. An infant cannot yet state this belief for themselves.

Choosing to believe in Christianity has nothing to do with anyother human but yourself. All humans, no matter what faith they choose to believe, is at risk to faulter. No, her actions are not respectable but try finding a single person out there who has never made a decision that was disrespectful. One's choice to become a christian should be based on the teachings of the bible and what is in that persons heart, not based on others actions or else there will always be disappointment.

nope. my great-grandma was talking about how my dad (a christian) wouldn't have my uncle (who just died) get his last rights. At the funeral. I responded by saying that since I was an atheist then I guess my dad probably thought I was going to Hell, and somehow I was under the impression that my dad loved and cared about me. + being an atheist myself, I didn't believe my uncle was going anywhere but under the ground, like it or not (and i don't, it's just what i believe, can't help it)

The baby shouldn't be baptised because baptism is a sign of being a christian and the baby is way too young to decide to become a christian.
