It's not especially true, no. Also, garlic is not good for dogs over long periods.

If you have a bad flea and tick problem, don't be messing about with garlic. Just go to a vets and get some proper treatment over-the-counter - stuff from shops is often not very effective.

I recommend Fronltine Plus because it kills and prevents fleas and ticks. You also need to spray your house because where there's an animal with fleas, the fleas will be in the house too.

Chalice

EDIT: You can use Frontline spray to kills the fleas and ticks immediately. Frontline spot-on takes 24 hours to kill all fleas, so you can spray first then use Frontline Plus every two months from then on to stop the fleas coming back.

Please be careful about putting garlic in pets' food. There is a lot of argument re: if garlic is safe or not for animals.

I would use a topical tic/flea control source first if the ticks and fleas are so bad.

Frontline or Advantix are both good things to start with.

Also, get Borax (the stuff used to augment detergent, it cheap too) and sprinkle it into the carpets and pet bedding. It will dry out the shells of the fleas and kill them off (as well as eggs), vacuum up after 2-3 days and wash bedding after a day.

Use both regularly to keep fleas and ticks away!

yes it is true that fleas and ticks dont like garlic... that advice is out there for us humans but somehow people started using it for their animals not knowing that most dogs can have allergic reactions to garlic

Do a good long bath in Dawn(dries skin so you need to condition also) then use cortizone on any hot spots( balding or chewed, raw areas of skin) then get your dog some frontline plus. Ask any vet...they dont need to see your dog to purchase it, just ask for ONE dose(not a box of three) which should cost about 10-13 dollars on average. One dose between shoulder blades should last about 4-6 weeks.

I have never heard that before. To repel fleas, stop into your local pet supply store and get a flea repellent. Additionally, garlic is highly debated about its use in dog foods. Onion is highly toxic to dogs, and is confirmed to be highly toxic. Garlic is in the same family as onion and is not confirmed to be toxic. However, many vets and dog owners decide not to use garlic in their dog foods because of how similar they are to onions and because of how very, very toxic the onion is. Onions cause anemia in dogs and cats and the effects of feeding it are cumulative - a dog can be killed by eating too much onion, such as getting into your soup pot or the trash, or by being fed a little bit of onion over a longer period of time. So, read up on garlic and talk to your vet about it before deciding to use it. I personally do not feed my dog garlic, but I've seen it used in small doses in high quality dogs foods, and Victoria Stilwell even recommended small amounts of garlic mixed into dog food for fussy eaters on "It's Me or the Dog".

Garlic (and onions) are toxic to dogs.

However you CAN use "garlic and brewer's yeast" tablets...
If you really want to help, bathe him with either flea & tick shampoo, or Dawn dish sap. Start at the neck and wpork your way down the ody as fleas will try to run up to the head and ears to escape the soapy water.
Give him a capstar tablet.
A couple of days later use frontline+ or K9Advantix on him.
Keep his bedding clean.
Vacuum frequently.
Treat the yard as well, so he does not pick up more.

I really don't know about garlic helping, but I do know that apple cider vinegar does. We found a dog that was covered in ticks, and someone told us that if we would just add 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar to his water they would just fall off, and they sure as heck did. We also used that tick medicine you can get at wal-mart that you put on their fur. We put that on afterwards, and he has absoutely none now. Hope this helps.

Agreed. Garlic & onions are of the same family, and are toxic to dogs.

get him a good flea bath, use flea prevention, vacuum you house a LOT for the next two or three weeks, and don't use garlic.

garlic is in the onion family and can cause anemia on dogs...when you use it as a food additive expecially it accumulates in their systems and can be dangerous.
