well basically, tocbacco smoke contains chemicals that are carcinogens, which means basically they will cause cancer. When a chemical is introduced into the body, it is absorbed by the cells, but if the chemical is not healthy, it will destroy or mutate cells. Usually mutated cells turn into cancer cells and tumors. Then you get cancer and die. In people 40 and up, the effects start showing around that age because around this age, people are about to enter senior age and your body's immune system is not as good as it was before. Good Luck

If you smoke and die from a heart attack: they credit smoking as being the cause. If you do not smoke and die from a heart attack: you had a bad heart. That is why so many people die from smoking. The real question should be how many smokers die from heart disease that they would have had had they smoked or not. But it is more fun to blame smoking. When they really do not know: but are to afraid to say so!

It takes time for cancer to develop.
It takes time ot develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
It takes time to get hardening of the arteries.
The effects of smoking are cumulative. What you do now will come back to kill you later.
