I have/had a canon sd 450 but the lcd screen went two weeks ago and now the lens is jammed out so its pretty much garbage. Other then it breaking, the only major complaints I had were the semi-slow picture taking time, and blurry pictures due to my slightly unsteady hand (I love taking candid shots.)

I also felt the zoom range and flash could use some improvement but overall I was happy with my camera.

I want to know if the 850 is worth the extra $$ or if there is another compact camera that would be recommended to me.

How convenient for me. I just answered the same question for someone else... Here's my answer:

I do not own either camera, but I have handled similar enough cameras to pass judgement.

The SD850-IS has it ALL OVER the SD750. First of all, it has image stabilization. This is not smoke and mirrors and it really works. Second of all, it has an optical viewfinder. There are times when your LCD just is not adequate, such as in the bright sun, and you need to resort to using the optical viewfinder. This is also a good way to save your batteries. Third, the lens zooms to (an equivalent of) 140 mm instead of 105 mm. This is a significant difference in zoom power.

You might want to check in with the other question and see if there is any additional information that would help you.

in case you sweep aside fee, i could desire to rank them this sort: a million) Canon Powershot A720 is two) Canon SD1000 3) Canon SD750 Why the A720 IS? a million) It has 8 MP, that's the optimum out of a three cameras 2) It has image stabilization, which will counteract digicam shake 3) you have handbook controls on the A720 IS, which permits you to be greater desirable resourceful on your photos 4) Ergonomic grip makes it plausible for extra constructive dealing with 5) skill to function lens adapters for extra techniques evaluate the a number of 2 in case you prefer portability. The A720 IS is distinctly compact, regardless of the shown fact that the a number of 2 are ultracompact and skinny. (in case you % to get the SD1000, save around fairly. It lists on Amazon for $3 hundred+ yet fairly you will detect a clean one for approximately $one hundred and 40 now; its successor, the SD1100 IS, is basically $one hundred 75 on Amazon and one among my favorites)

I prefer cameras with an optical viewfinder, so the 850 would be my choice. And the lens-based IS is a good feature too.
