Three traveling salesmen get a motel room. The clerk charged them $30. So each man payed $10. After they go to the room, the clerk realized that he charged too much. The room was supposed to be only $25. So he gave $5 to the bell boy and told him to refund it to the salesmen. The bell boy gave each man $1 back and kept the remaining $2 for a tip. That means each man paid $9.
9 x 3 = 27 plus the 2 the bellboy kept adds to only 29. Where did the last dollar go to make $30?

Telling the reader that the men paid 9 dollars throws most people off. It's true, but irrelevant in trying to figure out this riddle. The trick to it is that people add and subtract at the wrong times, coming up with often absurd numbers.

The facts are clear: the men paid the clerk 30 dollars, the bellboy took 2, and 3 dollars were returned to the men. How much each man paid doesn't matter. 25 dollars are held by the men, 2 dollars held by the bellboy, and 3 dollars held by the 3 men. 25+3+2=30 dollars. There is no missing dollar.

it is wrong math..........$30 was given...$5 was given to the bell boy....so $25 to hotel.....$1 to each man which is $5-$3=$2 and bell boy kept $2 tip, so $2-$2=0! you cannot do 9 x 3=$27 because room was only $25. :)

There is no missing dollar. The confusion lies in the way the question is worded. The room was only 25$; 3+2=5 and all thirty dollars are accounted for.

no money is missing. the meal is $25, each traveler has $1 and the bell boy has $2 =$30. Knowing each man paid $9 is an abundance of imformation and confuses.
