In the US, it is customary to tip the waiter/waitress. It is a terrible system, that should be done away with. But that isn't your question.

Reality is, almost everyone tips. No doubt every server runs into a jerk occasionally that doesn't tip, or doesn't tip very well, but those are surely the exception. If you are consistently having this problem, you have to start considering that you might be the cause. Are you always clean and neat? Do you check back with your customers frequently? Do you do so TOO frequently? Are you friendly? Are you overly friendly, to the point of annoying your customers? I would suggest that you observe the other servers you work with, especially the ones who seem to get the best tips, and try to identify what behaviors they are or are not doing that seem to work. It will take trial and error, but if you are serious about it, you will get results.

In the service industry, you must focus on the big picture instead of the individuals.

Too often, the focus is on the guy that left no tip...or the one who left a huge tip.

You must realize that this variability in tips is going to happen. Focus on total tips and tips vs. sales overall...for a given night or week. Then ask yourself...how much am I making per hour and as a percentage of sales? Are my tips lower than other servers at the same location? If so...why? What are they doing that I am not? Am I making a good wage including tips when compared to other servers at other businesses? If not, are there other places where I could make more money and still enjoy the job?

Don't obsess about individual customers. It'll just make you mad.

Before tipping was common, waiters were paid decent wages. As tips become more common and larger, waiters are paid smaller wages. Tips do nothing but subsidise the employer. I've already paid for my meal and service - why should I pay the restaurant for the service twice?

It would be different if the tip actually went to the waiter, but in the long run it doesn't. If waiters do not receive tips, less people will be willing to be waiters and the restaurant will be forced to raise their wages to a decent level to make waiting attractive again.

Wouldn't you rather have a GUARANTEED decent wage without having to be dependant on the whims of the customers? Your question tells me that you would.

Mail-adult males, cashiers, or hotel maids make a minimum of thrice what a server does. Servers make $2-4 an hour, and that's an understood area of etiquette for those with BRAINS that tipping is an element of the fee of eating out. nevertheless via definition a tip is in no way legally required, and its volume is on the discretion of the buyer being served, in some situations failing to furnish an sufficient tip whilst one is predicted could be seen very miserly, a contravention of etiquette, or unethical.

Waiter's get tips. If you are working in a 5 star restaurant, you are probably getting your "tips" in your check. Some poshy restaurants don't like for the customers to leave tips. Maybe you work in a lower key restaurant.

Tip - To Insure Performance.
Now don't tell me that nobody is giving you a tip. You may not be getting all that you think you deserve. They may be adding a gratutity to the bill when they pay by credit card. Are you sure your management is giving you your fair share? Usually when the tip is included in the bill, the amount goes into a pool, and shared out to all the service workers. Maybe you are being short changed.

I would not tip if my server had an attitude or messed up on my order.

Some people that can afford to dine in such an establishment don't care about other people and what they have to go through on a day to day basis. Obviously they can afford 15% of the tab to tip the waiter. They are totally into themselves and look as others beneath them.

We should pay tips. I myself give tips to waiters when they serve me a meal or even a cup of coffee. May be you are not expected to tip a waiter in a take-away restaurant. But those who are waiting for a tip we should be generous to them as they need it and are waiting for it. That's why they are called waiters.

I'm surprised - in a 5 star hotel....
Ask the other waiters, perhaps this is happening to them, too.
Then ask your manager.
Good luck, waiting tables is hard work. I'd tip ya.

Don't get people started on this one. I'm a waitress so I understand where you are coming from.

However, some people just don't understand the business. They think tipping is optional. Which it is not. Let these people continue to be ignorant. I'm sure they would feel differently if they did a good job at work, and their bosses refused to pay them.
