Used to be they were incredibly dependable.
But in these modern days of the new 2000 Century, they've gone downhill. Are very poorly rated for customer reliability.
So get a new Hyundai which is cheaper, cheaper made, but gives you a complete 100K warranty!! And has won recent consumer satisfaction surveys!!

I would not put too much stock in what the Consumer Report magazines say. They are very much in favor of the Japanese cars. I own a 2002 VW New Beetle and I have had no major work done on the car. Volkswagens are very good and reliable cars. As of late they have had a few problems, but what car maker does not have its problems. The problems that VW is having is nothing like the problems that they had with the Rabbit model in the late 1970's and early 80's . Overall, VW's are very reliable and solid cars, but to each their own opinion!

Consumer Reports rates VWs as one of the worst cars to have, reliability-wise. Although I think the 06-newer seem to have better reliability. Their 2.0 liter turbo engine is used in almost all their cars, as well as some of the Audis.
The irony? The Audi A3 and A4 are recommended by Consumer Reports, because apparently they are reliable. So I guess you are safer spending a little more and getting an Audi instead. It's nuts, because that's like saying that Lexus has better reliability than Toyota, for example, even though are of the same company.

VW's do need care as any car does, you can fine good and bad car's from any maker. With Vw you must maintain good service on the Engine and a lot of none VW shops can not fix a VW problem when it arises. If you have a good dealer near you; try one.

I've heard they're unreliable in the states because European cars are made more for European road conditions as such, and they don't modify them enough for North American Geographical circumstances. That's why they break down a lot.Otherwise,I happen to love European cras a lot, and Asian cars as well.

the newer ones arent nearly as good as the mid-eighties. my dad had an 85 golf that he put over 350,000 miles on before the transmission went sour. a 16 year old car with that many miles just wasnt worth fixing anymore. only thing ever wrong with it was a head gasket.

I have heard that that is true, but i think it depends on how you treat the car...oil changes when needed, anti freeze, depending on how old the car cleaning out the carb ect.
