i have an emac and an itunes library of over 1,000 songs. i just had an external hardrive installed and a computer guy we hired moved all the itunes files to the hardrive. now it says "file not found, would you like to locate it?" i dont want to do that manually for all the songs. is there another way? oh, and i also went to itunes preferences -> general and changed the folder location, but that did not help. it still says would you like to locate it. what can i do?

i had this same problem and then i remembered that about the source folder. Open itunes and go to prefs (EDIT>Prefs>>Advanced>>>and under general it should say itunes music folder location. change it to the external HD folder that you have the files in. (remember if you have the file not in a folder on the drive then put them all on one folder and that becomes your source(root) folder for itunes. you may reinsert and insert your drive and it should keep the root folder. somethimes i have had problems because i connect it into a different USD port but just relocate the ITUNES folder (prefs) and it should be easy from there

Try this -

First delete all the songs in your library, otherwise you will get duplicates. If asked delete original file too, say no.

Go to file/import folder to library.

Select the iTunes folder on the external hard drive. It should grab every folder there. It may grab music you don't want, assuming other users folders are there, but you can delete those later. Easier to delete a few than add them individually.
