I was told by someone several years ago that some Boxers will develop an irregular heartbeat and could die from the condition. I have since bought a Boxer, she is 2 years old. I've tried to research some diseases that Boxers are prone to but didn't find anything. If you know about this topic, could you tell me how frequent this might happen and the name of the conditon? Thanks!

Heart problems in boxers are very common. Most purebreeds have genetic problems that go with them, and heart disease is one of the ones in boxers. I've known many with heart conditions - they don't develop suddenly, they're born with them but sometimes the problem doesn't present itself until later in life.

I would suggesting getting regular check ups with your dog - at least yearly - and having his heart listened to so any problems might be caught early. I want a boxer, but when I get one I'm going to have him checked very thoroughly so I'm forewarned if he seems to have a problem!

Best thing to do is have a long chat with your vet, they're the ones with the experience. I'd also suggest emailing this person:

... they've owned a lot of boxers and would be able to tell you how many time they've experienced heart problems with their dogs.

Tumours are indeed another common condition of boxers.

ALL dog breeds have diseases they are prone to so don't stress too much. Boxers are more prone to cancers than heart issues, but it is a possibility. My 8 year old Boxer has had 4 skin tumors removed (mast cell tumors) and it is my understanding that it is the biggest problem in Boxers, not heart problems.

SOME boxers may be prone to a condition called sub-aortic stenosis (sp)
Doesn't mean yours has it or will develop it.
