Every time I watch a documentary on Titanic, a $150 million movie or a billionair buy a yatch, I have to ask myself "Is that money really well spent?" I wonder how the world would be if people who have more money than they can spent in ten lifetimes would pay off a national debt, install a water system in a country or invest in the education of the children in a third world country. Why can't we do that? Why can't we abolish poverty, malnutrition, ignorance, and wars? We have enough resources in the world for everybody, enough money, enough water and food. We have very smart people in this world... what do you propose we do?

OK... obviously I hit a nerve with some people. So I want to clear up the aire, if I can. First of all, I am not thinking about socialism because that only works in paper... in my opinion, it is a good idea, it just doesn't work. And I know I am a fool to think that hollywood fat cats are going to give away money. I am also not asking to cover the problem with more money. And I am definately not asking the US to be a hero, as a matter of fact, it is time for it to back off and take care of the house.
The truth is that there is no solution to the unfairness of the world and I don't think I'll ever be able to see the world 'grow up' and your answers just made me see that no-one really cares (including myself) and that's just sad.

Why would you want to level the economy? For proposals, just browse the internet for the keyword of socialism. Typically it leads to oppression, and scarcity of just about everything but poverty. If you are looking for a uniform economy, with everyone in poverty, it sounds like you have a good plan. Everyone in poverty that is except the select few who make the rules that everyone else must live by. Here are the answers to all of your why questions: The wealthy people that have more than they can spend in 10 lifetimes have that money invested. Really, they don’t just have it stuck under their beds or in a vault where they can go count it to while away the hours. That money is used to provide jobs that employ people, provided for research to save lives, and general infrastructure of the city, county, state, and nation. How are they responsible for the national debt in any event? Isn’t the national debt created by the same rationalization that it is ok to spend someone else’s money for the good of group X? As far as the water system goes, it isn’t rocket science, the Romans hundreds of years ago were moving water around without difficult. The better question is, what is preventing a water system from being made? Poverty, malnutrition, and ignorance is not abolished by making someone dependent on begin given something. Find a homeless person, give them $5 and a hamburger one day, and if they do not change anything they are doing, the next day they will likely have spent the $5, eaten the hamburger, have the expectation of a repeat of the previous day, and be pissed off if they don’t get $5 and a hamburger. So tell him to go paint a fence for $5 and you are a lot better off, since he will be asking where he can find more fences to paint. And that is, by the way, is what the big bad US businesses are doing when they outsource overseas. Paint the fence and here is your $5. And people in the US are pissed about it because we want to paint that fence for $5. I really don’t think the answer of the rest of the world being dependent on us to feed, cloth, shelter, educate, and police them is a good idea. As far as what to do, we are already doing it.

Look around and you'll see that the people who have the zillion dollar yachts, give more to charities than anyone else.
Pleae notice, most of this is given to private charities, not public charities.I propose we continuing just that!
Researchers working on new strains of crops, curing disease, don't hog the spotlight, they just go about doing their work.
It's the politicians who claim they have all the answers, but don't accomplish anything.
Let me ask you a question. Do you have a cellphone. How much a month does it cost??
Who don't you give that up and donate what you'd spend for it to help pay off a national debt.
I'll be waiting for your response.

Movies like Titanic more than tripled its initial investment. That is everyone's dream. Our politicians, our leaders that have been elected by us, seem to have forgotten that little fact. We cannot do much more than we are presently doing with wars, terrorists and individual demands to be in control of Third World countries. Back home more people need to become registered voters to take control back from the big money corporations and lobbyists who evidently have the most influence in the outcome of the major legislation.

While we may think we have enough resources to solve everyone's problems, we don't. And if we gave away everything, there wouldn't be any incentive for individuals to develop our resources.
That lack of realism is what started America down the path of ruin, as was started by LBJ and his "Great Society" program.
If you're worried about the third world, then start with the third-world neighborhoods in your own city.

The biggest problem with your idea is the governments in the 3rd world do not want it to happen. They want to control the people and do this by keeping them poor as dirt. You can not just throw money at it thinking poverty is just going to disappear. As a nation we do try and have been for many years.
But if you think the fat cats in Hollywood are truly going to stop their self love, your a fool. They will just make a new add telling us we so selfish to want to keep our kids warm and dry. You do know Paris`s dog needs a new diamond dog dish.

Is it money well spent for you to buy the car you did or should you have bought one for less money? Is it my place to tell you that you must buy the other car and give the extra money to someone who hasn't worked and therefore can't buy their own car? Should I be able to take the money you made and give it to someone else or should you be able to give it to your children when you die?
Many of the worlds rich do support the type of activities you mentioned. Ted Turner, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are all among the biggest donators to charity. Should someone be able to tell them that they *must* donate their money elsewhere? or that they are not entitled to buy things for themselves with the money they have earned?

because there is always someone who will take good and turn it to evil--also people need to try to take care of themselves--like less children in the poor countries-- does it make sense to have 10 kids in the hope 1 might survive

Taking the total wealth and dividing by the total population leaves us with about $5,000 per person per year. I don't think anyone would mind if you gave up your own income until you hit that middle ground, but please do not try to spend the money I worked for and earned.

Socialism is not the answer, and for the U.S. to help everybody in the world when we can't even get our own people fed is the problem.
