For Christmas, I got a Dell laptop, with Windows XP Media Edition, but a vocher for a free upgrade to Vista when it was available. In April [approx], I decided, what the hell, may as well try it, and installed Vista. But doing so uninstalled a lot of my programs, including Norten Anti-Virus, my webcam, and WI FI! I dealt with it for awhile, but then I downloaded some things, and I got some ridiculous viruses!! Window;s Defender can't do crap, so at the moment, I'm screwed. I have the reinstall disk for XP, but I want to know if it'll get rid of the Adaware, trojan horses, etc. Please help!!

It doesn't really matter that operating system you use. And Windows Defender is an antispyware program, so it only protects against spyware, not viruses!

A computer virus is a small program that infects a computer without the user permission. It attaches itself to other files and quickly multiplies.
It is strongly recommended that you use an antivirus program on your computer and that you keep it updated. This will prevent any infection and clean your computer if it was infected previous to the install.

You are infected with a virus if:

* Your computer is very slow, stops responding, restarts or shuts down by itself from time to time.
* Your hard disk or the removable drives (floppy drive, CD-ROM, USB Flash) are inaccesibles or the files are corrupt.
* Unusual error messages appear.

In case your computer got infected, try the following:

* Get an antivirus program (if you don't have one already) See the Download antivirus page to get a free one.
* Update your antivirus
* Scan all your computer and delete, repair or quarantine the infected files.

If you have problems in eliminating viruses from your computer, you can also try one of the free tools available in the Other download page.

To keep your computer virus free:

* Have an antivirus program and update it from time to time (some even update automatically)
* Use a firewall. Download one from Download firewall page.
* Only download files from sources you trust.
* Don't open e-mail attachments, unless you know who sent it.
* For more protection you can scan your computer with online scanners provided free by some of the best companies. See the Online scanners page.

The problem with Vista with regards to anti-viruses is that Microsoft did not contact any anti-virus company to upgrade their patches to work with vista, bcoz good old Bill wanted windows to be a stand alone software so he created his own anti-virus which is Win Defender. But microsoft is an OS company not an anti-virus company so Defender is crap.

So since anit-virus softwares are not 100% compatible with vista, when you install an anti-virus to vista (assuming you can install it at all) the features for that anti-virus will not be implemented 100%, it wont totally work.

A couple of weeks ago I read in PC Guide that so far McAfee and Norton are still making patches for vista on their software.

Even online anti-virus scanners are not 100% compatible with Vista.

So lets give good old Bill a big applause for his stupidity :-D

Click on this link
Then look for on the left hand side the link to SCAN NOW.
It is low down on the left so you will have to scroll down.
This will do an online scan of your computer and will remove any viruses that it finds. You may have to download some software first but as you are already in deep virus doo doo it does not matter!
Give it a try. Anything to try and keep Vista!

Since you have the disc with you, you should just do a re-format on your computer. Delete EVERYTHING off of it and start over new. It will get rid of everything on the PC and be almost like a new computer.

Don't upgrade to Vista at the moment, it isn't too great and isn't compatible with many things.
