For an example, let us say there are two buildings both on the verge of collapse. One has 2 ppl, the other 6. And you are a fireman. You only have enough time to save one group. You choose to save the 6 people. Are you a utilitarianist then?

House one may be a nursing home for the very old. Each person could be on life support with only weeks to live. With 6 people a total life expectancy of 1 year.

House two could be the home of two brilliant scientists working on the cure for cancer and have just made a breakthrough. This breakthrough could save millions of lives.

As you can see there is no simple answer.

What he should do is try to do both. Contact other fire crews with the urgency of the situation. Save all the lives. A person with two weeks left to live is as important as one with many years to live.
