Reminds me...At a buffet, this moron stuck his thumb in the sauce dip.
I ask him, "Bro, why'd ya put your thumb in the sauce?"
He shows me his thumb has a nasty cut, and claimed his doctor told him to keep it in a moist place.
So I say, "Well why don't you just stick your thumb in your a*s hole?"
He looks right at me and says, "Why, that's exactly where I had it before arriving at this buffet."

If the plate has been used already, then yes...it's gross. If they are simply standing there and then once they put in on their clean plate decide it really isn't what they wanted and put it back using said utensils, then I think that is ok. As long as they have not touched it in anyway with their hands or fingers. I would rather see that than the piece of food go to waste when they throw it away instead.

It would bother me if the piece of food was placed on a previously used plate and was put back with whatever they had just consumed clinging to it, or had placed the item next to some uneaten food and got some of that on the item (I'm not one who cares if food "touchs" on a plate) but someone may not like the food it touched (or worse is allergic to it) that would be a serious problem.

I think it's mostly poor manners not to think ahead, it's greedy and inconsiderate to just load up and put back and perhaps take back again without caring what others would think. However as long as their plate was clean I don't think it'd matter germ wise; clean plate, thongs or utensils only... germ wise it'd be no different if they'd just lifted it up and put it aside a bit on the serving platter (perhaps to get at a much different sized piece underneath).

I think it's almost funny that buffets have sneeze guards to protect the food from cooties, but people's cootiefied hands touch the food servers. I don't avoid buffets (my favorite restaurant is BD's Mongolian Bar-be-cue; They're not only healthy, but very veg-friendly, and reasonable, if one goes during lunch hours). Instead, I take sanitizer with me and put it on before I hit the buffet and then after, before I start eating.

LOL! Most poeple who change their minds usually just keep it on their plate and just dont eat it. I have changed my mind but the food never reached my plate, it was in between the tongs and then I decided to put it down before it got that far.

Ewww...I don't eat from Buffets. I was once at a buffet restaurant and someones kid (he was probably about 8 or 9) took the serving spoon, put food on his plate with it, licked the spoon and put it back on the buffet. Yeah....Ewww....Now I don't eat at a restaurant with buffet....

Oh thats nasty. I've seen that happen, and I've just pulled the offending piece of food out and set it along side... the workers will take it away.
Its MORONS like that that give society a bad name.

In my opinion - once it touches the person's plate, it should not be put back

It's poor manners. They should consider if they actually want the food, instead of picking it up first. Some people just don't think before they act.
