Tax liens are not removed until they are paid and that's 7 years from the date paid.
You can try disputing this, but getting this off will depend on what state you got the tax lien. Most reporting agecies can look up a gov website that will verify if this tax lien has been paid or not. Some states may not have this information available electronically so the credit agencies will send out a third party to verify this tax lien. These third parties that verify gov and court records are pretty accurate, but you can always take the chance on them slippin up. Tax liens suck.

If it's an IRS tax lien, even Jehovah himself would not get it off. Pay the blasted lien, and then wait seven years for it to fall off of its own accord.

IRS LIEN? Pay it and wait 7 years.
In most states IRS liens attach as super liens for 20 years and can be renewed for at least 10 more

probable not likely in view that their lien may well be placed on your abode purely before the own loan. this would be a draw back to the lender in view that in case you defaulted, the lender would get much less.

This one one of the three things that never go away, the others are child support and student loans.
The only way these go away is if you pay them and then wait 7-years for them to fall off on their own.

If it is unpaid you can't unless you pay it. They'll just keep renewing it until you deal with them.
