What could be causing this? And how can I treat it? Is there anything over the counter for it?

It sounds like your dog is starting to develop an ear infection as a result of moisture in the ears. Keep his ears as dry as possible and go to a veterinary pharmacy and get some ear cleaner and ear powder. I know the directions on most ear cleaners say that you should jsut squirt it in and let the dog shake it out, but don't do that. It won't keep the ears dry enough. Put some on a cotton ball and swab his ears out then sprinkle a little ear powder in to absorb as much moisture as possible. The easiest way to determine if it's an ear infection is by how his ears smell. A doggy ear infection is fungal typically, and has a sweet yeasty smell, very similar to athlete's foot.

If it hasn't cleared up or you see your dog shaking his head or scratching more, take him to a vet, who will give him oil-based ear drops to solve the problem. Good luck!

Don't be putting vinegar - or anything else - in your dog's ears. You can't start taking the advice that was meant for someone else - you don't know what remedy they were talking about, and the dog might not even have the same problem as yours!

You do need to go to a vet. You can't start experimenting with home remedies suggested on here until you know what the problem is - it'll mostly be a waste of time, and you're risking doing more damage. It sounds like an ear infection, which requires antibiotics, and these is prescription-only medicaton - i.e only available from a vet.

It could be an ear infection. If that's the case, there are medications you can get from the vet. However, a groomer once gave me some "home remedies" that I haven't tested myself. You may want to check with the vet first, and who knows, maybe it's not an ear infection.

mix equal parts of water, vinegar, and peroxide and put it on a cotton swab to wipe the ears out.

She also suggested using athlete's foot cream. Dog ear infections are caused by fungus, not bacteria.

To prevent this in the future: Keep your dog's ears clean and dry. don't get water in them when you are bathing him. Also, keep the hair inside the ears trimmed. If it is a long eared breed, like a basset hound, get special feeding bowls that keep ears out of the food while they eat and drink.

This is all just if he has an ear infection though. Best of luck!

It sounds as though you pooch has an ear infection. While working at an Animal hospital, I got many calls about this. They sell a product at the vets called Oticalm and Oticleanse. However, when in a bind and out of funds, The vet always said a mixture of 1 part vinegar, 4or 5 parts water and a drop or 2 of dish soap works well, Shampoo bottle size. You will need to clean his ears. Generally they get a yeast infection and this has worked well for my Lab that is constantly getting ear infections. Remember to pull the dogs ear up straight in the air gentle. This makes it safe to clean and you due to the shape of a dogs ear it ensures that you don't go too deep. Hope this helps.

Dog probably has an ear infection. Normally there is not an over the counter antibiotic for that.. I would take him to the vet... Happened to my dog and I thought ear mites and bought an over the counter medicine and wasted my money when I found out that it was an ear infection and needed an antibiotic..

Good luck...

I read some of the answers and agree with some of them, If you know your vet on a personal basis, you can take a cotton swab and turn it in the red area and put it in a plastic bag, take this to the vet and ask him to check it for ear mites or infection, this is the cheap way, without taking in your dog and getting charging an office call.

It sounds like ear mites and an ear infection. There is over the counter meds for the mites, but I would not use them if there is an inner ear infection. I would suggest bringing it to the vet.

Could be ear infection. Definitely take the dog to the vet as soon as possible. It will cost you about $40 or $50, but needs to be done.
They sell Ear Drops at pet stores, but they do NOT work.

The short answer is no -- don't do anything else to your dog's ears and take him to the vet. Your vet has to see and evaluate the ears before they can prescribe good treatment. There are several different conditions it could be and your vet is the best equipped to treat them effectively.

Good luck
