I've read at 720p resolutions the optimal seating distance is 1.5 x the screen size. So 1.5x42" is 63", or 5.25 feet.
1080p looks best at 1 x the screen size.
Standard Definition (480p) is 2 x the screen size.

I would say no... but I would say that is the limit. The plasma's are a bit more forgiving of small spaces then the older "big screens" My parents have a 42" plasma in a small apartment and it's good

I'm not sure about your manufacturer, but I just purchased a new Sony 52" BRAVIA LCD TV, and it recommends that the viewing distance be 3-7 times that of the height of the TV. So if your TV is on a stand and from the ground to the top of the TV is 4 feet, than you should be 12-28 feet away.

They say you should sit further away, but HD programming at 6 feet on a 42" plasma is GREAT.
I have a 42" panasonic plasma and although our couch is approx 8 feet away, I usually sit closer and have no problems at all.
(however, non HD programming looks better if you sit further away)

Slightly...A pretty good rule of thumb is to double the diagonal size of the screen, and you don't want to be any closer than that. In your case 42"x2=84"=7'. You don't want to be closer than 7 feet to a 42" TV. You'd probably be happpier with something closer to a 32"-38".

Part of my couch is 6' away from the screen and my TV (projection) is 10' wide, so I'll say no.

Distance from the screen is entirely up to you. Move your couch around to find the most comfortable distance. If you feel you are too close and you can't increase the distance then you are stuck with the image unless you get something smaller.Someone told me you can use mirrors to increase distance but i have not experimented with that yet.

No way man. Consumer Reports magazine surveyed HDTV buyers and the largest area of dissatisfaction of the buyers was buying too small of a TV.
Go for it!

Keep this in mind as you make your decision. According to consumer's digest, the number one complaint people have about their new hd tv is that they got one too small.

sometimes, i get right up next to my HDTV (42" LG LCD full 1080i) and wonder how they get all that detail in the picture - not sure "too close" is an option with HDTV...
