Obviously being female you will need a wider saddle than a male.
What you can do is make sure the top of your saddle is level (or near enough) with the floor).
Try out lots of saddles until you find one that suits you, saddles are very personal and individuals vary.
Good Luck

Remember that your saddle will take 100 miles to break in. With that in mind, get your bicycle fit so that you are sure that your body position is most optimal and see how you feel after the saddle breaks in.
If you still don't like the feel, look for a seat designed for serious cyclists. Those setas support the sit-bones and those bones are deisgned to hold your weight in a sitting position without putting unneccessary pressure on your spine or other muscle groups. Terry makes awesome saddles for serious riders out of amazingly soft Italian leather. I have been riding a Terry Butterfly forever and wouldn't trade it for anything! However, a saddle is a very personal thing so you simply have to shop around and see what works best for you.
Good luck!

Welcome to the club. Everyone gets pain in their butt when they start riding. The more you ride the less you hurt. Initally you need to be careful because you won't want to ride when it hurts a lot. Padded shorts can help a bit, a gel seat cover can also be great. Check your saddle height and make sure it's not too high. If you butt still hurts a lot in a week it's probably your saddle but I would expect some pain until you break yourself completely in.

If you just started riding you will have a fair amount of discomfort for a while
More padding is not always better
If you have a skinny little butt, you might need a smaller, more narrow saddle
go to your local bike shop and get properly fitted on your bike, fit is the first place to start

I agree with the other comment, saddle positions are very personal. I must have moved mine 5-6 times before I got comfortable.
You can adjust the tilt, and slide it foreward and back. If no adjustments work, you need a new saddle.
don't get something with lots of gel thinking it'll be comfortable - it will only cause chaffing because of the extra friction.
My recommendation from customer feedback and personal experience is to try something by Specialized that says "Body Geometry" on the package.
Lastly, pick up a pair of bike shorts. Not all of them are spandex if that isn't what you want. Many now have the spandex short built into an outer short.
Good luck

It is common for evrybody male or female. Even after if you start riding after a long gap. Try inclining your Saddle (seat). Making upward you will make you seat on the wide-back side of the seat. Making downward, you will seat on the narrower side of the seat. I would sit on the wider area.
Do not raise your seat too high or too low. Go to TREKbikes.com and http://www2.trekbikes.com/Assets/Inside_Trek/Owners_Manuals/asset_upload_file908_226187.pdf
and read the 'Seat angle and height' part. Adjust your seat height with or without any one.
This pain will go away in few days as your butt muscle becumes strong.
You may try wide with gel pad seat from walmart, price $19 but may not be needed after a week you ride.

My advice based on my experience from cycling on various surfaces for well over 5 years is simply buy a new comfortable saddle and make sure that you confirm the proper seating position from the manufacturer before you place your butt on it.

Get a padded seat that is also anatomically shaped. Find one that with gel padding and shaped so it fits the two contact points of your rear.
