ok i am not a non believer. i believe in god. i believe faith heals us.
but i cant accept when some say that science is a bogus thing. i mean major scientific breakthroughs have not been around for long, but god and spirituality has been as long as humans have been.
so where was god when people were getting killed by plagues and other natural disasters ?
also is nt spirituality the major reason for most killings around the world ?
osama terrorises because he feels it is god's will does nt he ?
and bush went to war with iraq killing several since he felt the same ?
i admit science has its follies. but atleast it accepts it and tries to improve itself.
so where is the arguement that proves spirituality is better than science ?
my husband begs to differ. anyone else here to take God's side ?

to Black hole..... exactly my point. but why do ardent believers like my hubby have to think of science as their enemy ?

Mr.taco, i agree that spirituality was not the reason for the killings. i dint mean it that way. i meant to say that it was done in the name of god. was nt it ?

as i said i believe in god. i believed when my loved ones were in trouble and i believe god is there to take care of me.
my question is : why do some people think of science as an enemy to god ?
for ex-why do they say using a condom is immoral when it could save millions of lives in countries such as africa where aids is wide spread ?

Well generally, science is much more humble and self-correcting in its pursuit of facts. Science doesn't claim to know everything, but we have solid understandings for many of the complex workings of the universe and this gives us all our marvels and lifestyles now, including cell phones and skyscrapers.

Science is not afraid to admit when it's wrong, indeed it takes every chance to prove its own ideas wrong - it's only when a hypothesis stands up to rigorous and relentless testing that it's seen as valid and concreted into a theory.

Faith is the opposite. Faith claims to know or explain everything, and even the difficult mysteries are shrugged off with a simple "God done it" or "God made it that way" or even "God works in mysterious ways." Faith isn't based on facts or empirical evidence (indeed it ignores or distorts reality just to survive) but instead based on an old book that has been proven wrong on pretty much every account that's been tested - even historically it doesn't hold up.

The worst part is that faith teaches us to be content with not understanding the universe... if we went on faith we would still be in the dark ages that christianity catapulted us into in the first place... we'd still be burning independent thinking women at the stake for being witches....

Remember, when the term "Christian science" first appeared it was in opposition to the "Germ Theory of Disease" because the bible clearly states disease is *only* the result of demons, witches and dark spirits. Obviously they were wrong, but all of their arguments back then are the same stupid arguments they use against evolution. Clearly if "christian science" had it's way there would be no medicines whatsoever and we'd still have an average lifespan of 30 years (unless you're burned as a heretic first).

EDIT: Ardent believers such as your hubby tend to be against science for the very simple reason that science proves their beliefs wrong. The bible says the world is a flat oval that's immovable and built on four pillars, it suggstes the world is 4,000 years old, it says life was created as it is now, and that the heavens revolve around the planet. Because of science we know the reality that this is all false, and the bible has been wrong on everything so far. The bible isn't even close to accurate historically (we know with absolute certainty that Caeser didn't enact the census the bible claims was there, also there were never any jewish slaves in egypt, king herod never slaughtered innocent children, etc.), but christians are better at distorting history then they are with science, because science is utterly impartial and empirical.

Three things:

1. You are comparing apples and oranges. Science is better for what its purpose is. Faith and spirituality are better for their purpose. Too many people waste their time trying to compare the two, but they are simply just different things. So i don't take either side. It simply is not an either/or situation.

2. Almost all of your little points about killing are totally inaccurate. First of all, spirituality has NOT been the reason for most killings around the world. Power and money are the causes of every single war that has ever happened. Sometimes religion has been used as an excuse. But more often it has been land, money, greed, nationalism, or race that have caused violence in the world. Bush is a poor example, too. Everyone knows that oil and revenge are his motives. If religion were a major factor, then he'd have better than a 30% approval rating considering that 70% of the population is Christian. Do you honestly think that if religion were gone that people would suddenly stop being greedy, selfish, and violent? Fat chance. I'll give another example on this subject: hasn't science been responsible for the creation of the most horrific weapons of mass destruction ever built? We can literally kill thousands with a push of a button. Does that make science bad? Heck no. It makes the evil men who push that button bad. Religion is no different.

3. The "God lets people die in disasters" complaint is really lame. Look, if you don't believe in God, then fine. If someone believes in God, however, then they likely believe in an afterlife. If God exists, then when people die, they are going back to him. Most faiths believe this to be a good thing and that people are rewarded for their suffering. So if God exists, according to most faiths and spiritualists, death is NOT a bad thing. Death sure sucks if God doesn't exist, though, doesn't it?

This is not an argument against science, though. Like I said before, you can have both. I'll never understand why so many people waste their time having this dichotomous discussion. Things are rarely so black and white.

I, myself, have found a middle ground. My religion in the foundation that helps me survive the craziness of this world. I also believe that science is a tool, one that helps us evolve, both physically and mentally.
I've answered the "Where is God when...." questions before. It's at those times, that he's the most busy. At the moment of a disaster, he's with the suffering people, he's delivering the dead to their reward, he's touching people a half-world away to start collecting funds to help those in the disaster.

Osama Bin Laden kills because he can, and uses his religion as a shield to avoid his own people killing him.

Bush went to war with Iraq, because Saddam supposedly had WMD's. If Bush had said, "We are going to war because Iraq is ignoring the UN mandates, we'd not be having a problem. As a Christian, I think the "God told me to invade Iraq," makes Bush look like an Idiot. God hasn't told one nation to invade another one, since the seige of Jericho.

Spirituality is slightly better than science, because this is where our ethics come from. Science has too often done something just because it can.
A spiritual person would say, "If we augment a chimpanzee so it can function like a person, it should have the same rights as we do." A scientist would say, "Let's see if we can do it, and then sell it to industry as a slave."

As for science admitting it's follies, it has not. Take the global warming cycle. There are scientist who are getting paid to say it's the end of the world, and they have tried to literally kill other scientists who say it's just a cycle.

HI,
You would have to ask yourself, Is'nt the Creator the
greatest Scientist of All Time? It is through science that
proves there is a "Higher Power" at work in the universe.
The creation is in itself based on scientific principles
which I won't go here into, but for those who have Faith,
that also in itself is a "Higher Spiritual" Science that
works and believe it or not, it is "Proven through science
as well. There are many Scientist in the field of DNA,
that are convinced through the study of microbiology
that there is indeed a Higher Power at work, especially
in the field of things that cannot be seen by the normal
eyes. The Creator designed DNA, and that in itself is an
amazingly High Science that's been around for eons.
Surprisingly it took man 1000's of years before he was
able to tap into this reality of existance.
So in essence Science + The Creator has always been
and always will be Together. Thers's no shame in having
"Faith" in Both. For non believers, science eventually
"Proves" that there is a HIGHER POWER that RULES!
Be of Good Cheer!!!!!!

First I will give you the short answer... Religion vs. Science... neither is better or worse. They are merely alternatives to each other.

To answer the rest:

God was where he always is when bad things happen. Why do people have to blame God for plagues. In OT times he caused many himself.

Osama Terrorizes because he makes money and fame. He is like a turban wearing Dr.Evil. Who hides behind his own version of a Muslim religion. I would say Bush went to Iraq not looking for Osama but to curb terroristic threats from the one country he felt was the worst, plus we need a place to have bases when we go anywhere foreign. Watch documentaries on WW2.... Its basic strategy, and many laymen may not understand why, but its important.

Science constantly fights itself internally just like religion. One theory may state matter is super tiny spheres and other theory might state that its little tiny lines. Each scientist BELIEVES his theory is true and right. Happens ALL the time.

There is no proof that science or religion is better. They are just alternatives like Burger King and Mc Donalds.

I do take God's Side. God gave us knowledge and the intelligence to use science. But he never said Science had to be used to prove God, or religion. Science is of god just like everything else.

If God granted you a brick you could build with it or use it to kill.. Its our choice what we want to take from it. science is just as chaotic and mixed up as Religion. You have many sides that believe one theory and others that don't, Just like religion.

Science and religion believes they have answers, they know where we came from, Know where were going, and can help ease any struggles we have, however Science use the logic of intelligence and Religion uses the Faith of hope.

Both are very powerful human instincts..

I hope that helps.

All true science points to a Creator. The purpose of science that has any validity at all is to reinforce what God says about Himself in His word. The deeper into scientific study honest scholars go the more credibility they find in a Creator.

All false science is an attempt to disprove God through human intellect apart from Divine Revelation. While this science offers facts, they try to twist those facts to discredit God and His Word, and prove their "theories."

The largest group of criminals in this area are evil--utionists.
They misconstrue theory for fact and leave many gaping holes in their belief system that cannot be explained. Recent discoveries have caused scientists in large numbers to see evolution as impossible and lacking substantial evidence and refute evolution as unprovable.

As far as the religious calamities you mentioned above; God is always around when plagues and natural disasters come. The problem is that many people don't seek Him as the One who can help them and depend on governments and other people instead of God. He always responds to calls for help from those who trust Him. Osama doesn't represent the One true God so don't blame God for the sinful acts of mankind. LIke Osame - we all choose to sin.

The problem you are having is the same one many people have. They see the evil men do and think God is required to step in and stop it. If He did that He would have to take away all our "free wills" and make us a bunch of robots. Evil will continue until time is swallowed up in eternity. Men will make sure of that.

1) of course science is not a bogus thing. lots of good and bad come from science.

2) God set this flesh age in motion and he can't simply intervene in every crisis of the flesh. Anything relevant to his prophecy and fulfillment of that, he can and does intervene to make sure it happens how it is written.

3) I don't think there is an argument that can say spirituality is better than science. social darwinism has caused the deaths of millions as well. hitler used it and so did stalin.

take the good with the bad and merge the two when possible. for instance the 'intelligent design' crowd is growing. thousands of scientists that do NOT adhere to a religion or dogma etc....yet do accept the presence of a creator based on scientific data that clearly shows form, structure, purpose etc...nothing random or chaotic.

firstythirsty. an intelligent coherent answer from atheist that didn't just say "christians are stupid and God doesn't exist get an education" etc...like many morons do
.kudos to you. we need more atheists like you around this forum.

Wow....it fairly is a mouth complete and a strategies complete. I too am a Pantheist Pagan or perhaps nevertheless my ideals selection from yours (fairly) i will see the factor you attempt to make. there'll constantly be people who say we worship the created and not the writer yet while the universe replaced into certainly created by the hand (or strategies) of the Divine then it too holds divinity and the appreciation and acknowledgment of that's what Pantheism is (to me). that's not worship. it fairly is straightforward reverence. I revere the universe, I admire it and understand that i'll under no circumstances understand or understand each thing. We study, we strengthen and we evolve. this is the character of human beings (as is my understanding individuals). What we do with the understanding we earnings isn't constantly friendly and is not constantly interior existence like comprehension. All we are in a position to fairly do is study from our blunders and do our maximum suitable to not repeat the previous. this is my Pantheist reaction. i did not intend to flow away an prolonged one yet i'm unsleeping and exceptionally caffeinated this morning so there ya flow....

God made us, some of us He blessed with the need to figure out how the universe works, or how plants grow, etc.(they get A's in science class).
Others don't give a hoot how they grow they know they just do and that is good enough for them. (we get C's)

You seem to have forgotten 9/11 and the other 150 incidents that happened before we went over there.
God did not make robots he made us with free will and He gave us the rules and regulations. So just like our folks who let us go out the door we are going to mess up from time to time but we are always forgiven.
Since I never liked science class, I will vote for God.

I think you should catch up on the Bible. War is a sign of the rapture. It says people will die because there will be war. God and spirituality have actually been around WAY longer than us humans. Osama doesn't believe in OUR God. He believes in the Islam god. Not ours. If we didn't have the war on Iraq, we would be getting bombed by muslims even more. Im here and I take the side of God. If you don't you aren't a true Christian..

I know I'm gonna get flagged for this a ton of times. I don't care.
GO FOR IT.
