It may that your cd lens may be dirty and because of that the cd writer is writing very slowly try getting a cd lens cleaning kit if that is not the problem your cd drive looks to be malfunctioning and may be time to get a new one and check if you are using the right discs for that cd writer and using the correct speed.

WOW!! Only thing I can think of is that if you don't have a lot of hard drive space left and a small amount of memory the comp needs to load, burn and reload the memory a super # of times, If the hard drive virtual memory is too small or non-existent, the virtual memory cannot be used as extended RAM and therefore compounds the problem. You also might have your burn speed set to low also. And the final idea is that if you have the burn prgm set to verify the data that has been burned and have the above problems, you really have a slow lane. I would also watch the progress meter and have it create a log of the burn process. Look for repeated attempts do do a certain thing and then try to find a fix. Processor speed also comes into play. There are just too many variables to look at to say exactly what is taking it so long. One thing for sure, 40 minutes equals a problem.

Is it a very old/slow burner? How about your computer, is it fairly new? Older 2x/4x burners will take about this long to make a full cd.

Update your burner drivers from the manufacturer's website. Also, check the burn speed, it may be set to burn at a low rate. I'm not sure how to see it in windows media, but try downloading a trial version of Nero. You can easily change the burn speed in that program.

could be the speed of your drive. an older cd rw at like 16x speed will take awhile to record.

I have a 4x DVD RW drive, it takes a long time to write a disk.
