I got a new 5.1 surround sound receiver. How do I get everything to operate on 5.1? If I use the regular red and white AV cables, then it's not 5.1, right? If so, how can I make my PS3 and TV and xbox be running 5.1?

You will need either an optical cable or a digital coaxial cable(it has an orange band around the connector) which you will be able to run from your cable box or DVD player to the receiver. If connected right the display on the receiver will show L,C,R,SW,SR,SL. And of course you will be able hear the difference, especially when that THX logo appears!

5.1 sound means that you have a left front, right front, center front, rear speakers and a sub-woofer. The rear speakers in a 5.1 system broadcast the same Chanel even though there are two speakers.

If you have all those speakers, and you have hooked them up to the appropriate outputs on the rear of your receiver, then you are set for 5.1 sound. Plug all your sources into the correct input jacks on the back of your receiver.

The rest is based on the media you're playing. If a disk is not recorded in 5.1 dobly stereo, then you won't get the 5.1 sound effect no matter what you do.

You can certainly use optical cable to connect your sources to your receiver. You may also use digital cable. Your receiver must be equipped to accept these special types of cables however. If not, just plain ole' RCA cables work just fine.

5.1 is old technology, so I'm not sure what inputs/outputs you have on your receiver. 7.1 Dolby is the current technology, and some higher end receivers can use straight 7 channel input without needing the Dolby processing on the receiver end.

Like tomk said, RCA jacks, while the cables themselves only carry stereo, the decoder can still get surround sound from the stereo RCA cables, but using fiber optic or digital coax is better though

Surround sound can be gotten by either the digital coaxial or digital optical output of any device. I hope you have several digital inputs on your new suround sound receiver!
