A few words of Hindi allways help. But once you meet people who aren't educated middle class, you won't cope with English alone.

I think it would be a good idea to get a basic grounding in Hindi. This way you can read signs and things like that. Hindi is the official langauge of the Indian government and more and more Indians from the non-Hindi speaking areas are learning it these days because it is the language that migrant workers from different parts of India are using to speak to eachother as well.
Just get the book "Teach Yourself Hindi" by Rupert and Weightman and go through that. It will give you a good foundation if you can get through that book.
Hindi is not an easy language to learn, but anyone can memorize some key phrases. Learning a foreign language takes a lot of time but it can also be very enjoyable and intellectually challenging.

Hindi is a beautiful language to learn. Many people can speak some Hindi in India, depending on whether you live in the Northern or in the Southern part of India. Learn the language of the state in which you wish to reside. Hindi will be an added bonus.

That depends a lot on where in India you are going to go.
I traveled in the Northern half, and learned the basic phrases and some of the writing. I really never used it. I would say a few words here and there just to have fun, but I was ok with just english.
If you skeak english and you CAN get a job there, then it is pretty safe to assume the other employees will skeak english as well. Unless you get a job hauling stones up and down a mountain, or tending cattle, then yes, you may need to skeak the local dialect.

Usually when you go to other countries people are pretty good about making you feel comfortable and if they know english, they would try to talk to you in english. Once you're there you will learn a lot just by learning from what you hear. You can ask people to tell you how to say basic stuff and they'll be happy to help.
