Olly has the instincts of a pack animal and is looking for opportunities to take the top spot. Be very firm and don't let him take the place otherwise he will become a human owner rather than you being the dog owner. Dogs don't mind a firm hand as it lets them know their place in the pack - a dog that knows its position in your family will be a happy pet.

Olly likes daddy's smell. But also the place on the sofa is warm and dogs like that.

LOL, my bulldog Manny does this too, when his daddy leaves his spot on the sofa. I think it is because he's trying to compete for Alpha Male position, and he figures that by claiming his spot on the couch, he is asserting his dominance. Of course, that only lasts until my boyfriend comes back and shoves him off the couch, which is very funny too, as Manny weighs 60 pounds.

I have a dog that will lay on my slippers that are on the floor when I'm reclining with my feet up on the sofa and here is my theory about why. She will know when I leave because I never leave without putting on my slippers which means I have to wake her up and move her out of the way to put them on. Its the same with your little one maybe, he will be the first to know when Daddy comes back because he will have to move over to make room for Dad. It a doggie way of keeping track of us so they can stay connected and still be able to nap.

He is seeking status thru a ritual .....the next lesson should be he must surrender it when daddy returns with no baloney.....when he does he will be on his way to being a good Beta dog....one who takes charge when needed, enforces the leaders rules and gladly allows the leader to lead....

Dogs are pack animals and he knows that is your husbands place. He instinctively wants to have that position. Provided he understands he has to give it up when your husband returns it is fine. It is all about the pecking order. He should know he can't be the boss.

It is a warm spot and it smells like dad. My puppy will come and steal the cats place by nibbling their paws until they move and then she lays down next to me where the cat was.

Because he is trying to take you husband place, or it could just be that the seat is warm!

It's warm and it smells nice to him. My dachshund does the same thing. As a matter of fact, so do my kids. Hmm....;)
