there are studies out there where dogs brought into prisons - even max and supermax facilities lowered the violence rate considerably. In fact, that's why a lot of corrections facilities will institute a dog program - where dogs (often times shelter dogs) are trained to be assistance dogs for the disabled, guide dogs for the blind, or even just good pets. It not only saves shelter dogs from being put down - but provides a great service to disabled people - and finally, it helps the inmates relieve some of the stress from incarceration.

You bet I believe in therapy dogs.

I have two certified therapy dogs and will be testing a third. It has been proven that therapy dogs and other animals do work and it doesn't matter so much what they look like. She should have him tested and certified so they will be covered by insurance when they visit. Look at Therapy Dogs International and Delta Dogs websites for more info. Check with the facilities in your area to see if any of them already have a program.

Yers I think that it's a wonderful idea! Working with your dog to help out the eldery, the unwell and developmentally disabled children is a very rewarding experience and your friend is very generous to consider it! Therapy dogs do not need to be purebred or of any specific type. All they need is their basic manners and obedience and a friendly personality!

Petting a dog has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, slow heart rate and relax tense muscles. It is physically and psychologically beneficial.

Yes! Therapy dogs are great. When someone doesn't feel good or feels down, it's so therapeutic to hold and pet a dog. If her dog is good natured and calm, he'd probably make a great therapy dog.

I think they're great. My toy poodle cheers up everyone she meets, whether it's older people or young children. I'd love to get her certified to become a therapy dog.
