why do you insist on criticizing God and those who believe in him?

ok so you arent a believer - but yet you still want to talk about God all the time even if its just saying bad things about him

I'm not Mexican - and I dont spend my time bad mouthing Mexico or their people.

I just dont get why people who dont believe spend so much time talking about something they dont believe in or have anything to do with

Jillbean:
Christians dont want to put God in the court systems and schools ~ he was there from the beginning ~ our Country was founded on the beliefs of Christianity. It is non-believers that want him removed.

wow it breaks my heart to read so much anger....maybe the Mexican thing was a bad analogy...sorry

as far as those of you who mentioned creationism in the schools, why cant we do both. Teach the children evolution and creationism and let them decide what they want to believe?

Pierr s: sorry I have to disagree.
the founders of this country (those who signed the declaration of independance; were Christians.
There is a reason our pledge to this country includes one nation under GOD and there is a reason our currency says "In God we trust"

Many of us don't spend any time criticizing God or people who believe in him. I'm on this forum because a large number of believers spend a lot of their time asking questions about atheists or addressing questions to atheists. I'd rather answer than let misinformation stand.

To follow your analogy -

If I had a lot of Mexican friends and if I was interested in the study of geography then I might very well be interested in engaging with them in discussion and debate on topics of mutual interest. Nothing much wrong with that, is there?

However, if my Mexican friends started putting down my country and my culture and told me that I was doomed if I didn't come and live in Mexico with them and that I was a fool if I didn't believe everthing they said about Mexico ---- then I would probably get somewhat defensive about it and would start defended my country.

(please note - I have nothing against Mexico - just using it as an analogy)

Atheists want to act against religion out of the purest motives to reduce harm overall in the world. If you think your religion doesn't harm people, you have the most selective accounting of religion and what it has done.

Religion is like smokers: we didn't always know that smoking caused harm but now we do. Recognize the harm, restrict the practice. Just as we control smokers and keep them from public buildings, we likewise had to impose controls on religion, and keep them out of the public sphere. We're not going to say, "Live and let live." because the religious are not letting people live!

A writer for American Atheists is basically saying: go ahead and bash the Christian religion, don't listen to their mewlings that they shouldn't be attacked. In the public forum of ideas, they don't deserve thicker armor than anyone else:

Oh, and I note the name of the guy who wrote this is Eddie Tabash, hahahaha.

By the way, the US was not founded on Christian principles, and it was the US government that said so, in a 1797 treaty with some Muslims from the area of the Barbary Coast (what we now call Libya:)

A U.S. treaty to avoid war with Muslims...imagine that!

I am a Christian...but, I would still like to answer this question....

Quite simply, those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Christians should be held to a higher standard. And, many evangelical Christians look at the Great Commission and feel it their obligation to evangelize the world...

Instead of being examples of Christ, many will take their Bible and pound it over people's head in an effort to make them believe...by so doing, you open yourself up for ridicule...as well as opening up what you believe in for ridicule.

Many fundamentalist Christians bring this on themselves.

I'm tired of the same old questions and answers.Change up time. How about when I see fundamentalists Christians, fundamental Islamists,Hindus and ALL other theists happy with everything(After all, others DO believe in god, just not yours)So,why are YOU criticizing atheists? Why would you come here and criticize my "belief system"?Heck, you aren't atheist,so why would you spend your time badmouthing atheism or its people?Does your pastor inside the church walls ever say anything about Islam other than it is a wonderful religion?Didn't think so.Why?After all, they believe in god.Think about it. What makes you and your god special?

Considering that organized religion affects lawmaking, education, foreign policy, scientific progress and people's rights, I find it hard to believe that ANYONE could not have an opinion about it, regardless of whether they're religious or not.

You don't have to believe in God to have an opinion about the fact that homosexuals can't marry because the Bible says so, or the fact that references to God are in the Pledge of Allegiance and on money, or the fact that creationists keep trying to get religion taught in public school science classes, or the fact that 85% of the United States Congress are Christians, or the fact that public announcement of a disbelief in God would render a Presidential candidate unelectable in this country.

I mean, you don't have to be religious to care about religious issues. Do you have to be a conservative to have opinions about Bush? Do you have to be a liberal to have opinions about Clinton?

Edit: You can't teach both because that wouldn't make sense. There is no controversy or debate about this issue. 99.9% of biologists in the United States support evolution. What does that say about the alternate viewpoints?

To teach an alternate viewpoint in science class that is accepted by less than a tenth of one percent of scientists would be ridiculous.

Because if we don't, then the more radical of you will decide they won and implement certain rules upon the rest of society in the name of your god.

Yoda Green's Hope: Is that suppose to be an insult? lol I suppose its only fair when a lot of us question your beliefs, that you can question our lack of.

Though, I'm more of an apathetic agnostic humanist thinking. I don't know if a deity exists, nor does it particularly trouble me one way or another. I choose to believe in human nature.

What does worry me though is when radical religious people want to force their beliefs on the rest of us in the form of laws. Its not the religion I have a problem with, its all the negativity its supposed followers instill in it.

not everyone who doesn't believe in God is as critical as you say. i am a Christian who appreciates those who have proven to be respectful toward my beliefs. yes, there are many non-believers who bad mouth believers, but did you notice that some of our fellow believers (assuming you are one) does the same???????? it's really sad.

also, GAgirl, you said that because some Christians are pushy and judgmental, it makes us all look that way. that is true, but the same can be said about those who do not believe. just because some are pushy and judgmental, does not mean that they all are.

Theists, especially christians, try to control and restrict us based on their views. If all christians stop crusading against science, culture, art, sex and sexuality, religious freedom and such, and stop telling everybody else they're going to be tortured throughout eternity unless they join you, I assure you that you won't encounter nearly as much hostility.

Have you ever heard people discuss smoking and its dangers even though they don't smoke themselves?

I'll make you a deal - if you can promise me that nobody will ever be hurt by religion again, I'll never bring up the subject.

By the way: I'm guessing you're not prevented from marrying the person you love by religious fundamentalists. Just a random guess...
