It totally depends on the amount of time you have to donate to it. If you want a parrot that can talk, is smart, etc, you have to be willing to be there 8-10 hrs a day interacting with it. Most all are like that except for if you cannot keep it in a room where it will get alot of attention and interaction, then go for a canary or finch. They do not like to be held and canarys sing nice, just feed, water, clean cage.. not much bother.. but if you want a true companion bird, you must match it to the amount of time you can give it, the area and size of cage you can have, do your research and youll have a happy bird that wont get given away. They are not like dogs and cats, they look at you as their flock member and will have very destructive behaviour if you cannot give them enough time and care. You cannot judge which are nice or not by the breed.... its the time involved. Example also: conures are bought alot because they are smaller parrots, and people think: oh great, a good size for an apartment! NOT! they are soooo loud. But i have a sun conure the loudest of them all, and its always on me like velcro.. so it only hollers when i have to leave and it sees me coming home. It knows the sound of my car and i can hear it down the road.. sheesh. Bigger breeds like amazons and cockatoos, macaws, greys, etc, must have alot of out of cage time. How much do you have for upkeep, like toys, they must have them to avoid boredom and other problems, Good food? not cheap seed, vet bill if needed? Lots to consider... they are all good breeds for the right person.. There are several great bird sites online that give the characteristics of most every type bird, as well as mattie sue athans books, she is great at helping people choos the right bird for them. AGain, please do some research, there are soooo many breeds.

I used to work in a pet shop with Birds and have hand raised several different kinds. I would suggest starting out with a hand raised parakeet they are very smart and if hand raised very friendly. Might be difficult to find but worth the looking. Parakeets are a great starter bird, very hearty, lots of colors and the least expensive. If you would like a little larger try a hand raised cockateil, a bit more expensive. Either bird will be more friendly if it's by itself, an only child, because it relies on you for friendship but that means you really need to take it out of the cage at least once a day to play and discuss your day. Please make sure your birds has a lot of toys to play with while you can't be with him/her and that you feed the best seed and a variety of greens, only NO LETTUCE it gives diaherra. Mine like fresh spinach and thawed frozen mixed vegetable. I also put alfalfa (used for hamster or rabbits) on top of the paper liner in the cage. You can buy alfalfa in a bag in your pet store.

We have 2 quakers, and a sunday conure. When I was little my parents had a macaw (they still have her) and conures. We've also had parrotlets and parakeets. I fell in LOVE with the quaker breed. They are extremely smart little birds with big personalities. They also are pretty cheap, if you get a green one. (Our blue mutation was pretty pricey). The quakers I have are both big snuggle bunnies, they will sit with me for hours, they make me laugh every day. They are loud, however. Ours screech and talk alot, they are not as loud as our conure he borders on shrill. You have to make sure quakers are legal in your state though, but they are definatly worth checking out!! Some of my fave quaker sites:
www.quakerville.com and www.quakerparrot.com (this one has a link to some really cute quaker videos!!) Good luck with whatever you choose!!
