That is a tricky question, because the obvious answer is yes, sweating will help you lose weight. MMA fighters, boxers, wrestlers and body builders all use saunas and diuretics to remove as much water from their systems as they can in order to achieve the specific weight they are trying to reach or look good for the event. It is something used when they "cut weight" and drop below what would be considered a normal, healthy level. At the best, this is a very temporary weight loss.
Healthy, sustainable weight loss sometimes involves sweating as a byproduct of the exercise you are doing, however not always.
There is no way to "sweat" off fat from your body, in the same way there is no way to eat a specific food and lose fat from targeted areas on your body.

You can indeed lose weight by sweating, but there's a problem with this particular method of weight-loss. When you sweat abundantly, you get rid of important electrolytes in your body. When one fails to rehydrate themselves, they become dehydrated which can be fatal to the body's organs and systems. When you work out or do strenuous work outside, it's best to drink Gatorade or some other sports drink to replenish the lost water and electrolytes from sweating.
Bottom line, I don't recommend sweating as a way to lose weight.

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.
The plan was so refreshing and so simple to follow. I did everything plan said and lost 23 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm now starting the diet again to lose 7 more pounds. This plan has changed my life.
Get started today!

Sweating means your body is cooling itself off, if you build enough heat inside for this mechanism to start, it also means you are producing energy. Calories are an energy measure, the more you produce energy, the more calories you burn. It's all related to burnt energy, not necessarilly burnt fat.
And sweating has a lot of factors that can affect it, so it should be not taken as a sure sign of fat being burnt. That's why people say you should not take it as a losing weight sign.
Athletes have conditioned their bodies to respond faster to heat and cooling their bodies, thus they sweat faster.

I'm no expert, but I thought that sweating helps rid of water as well as salt. The amount of salt in our blood regulates how much water is stored in our blood. So when we replenish with water, we may not hold the same amount of water before the sweat. So we may lose weight. But... It is only water weight.

Exercising makes you sweat, and exercising burns calories, which helps you lose weight.
If you just sweat because you are hot, you might lose a few pounds but it won't put you in better shape and you'll have to sit in the sauna for a long time.

You lose water, and so when you get on the scale after sweating a lot you will weigh slightly less. However, it is not fat loss and once you rehydrate yourself, the weight will come right back on.
