when you are receiving unemployment pay and you take a part time job do you still get unemployment pay? does it get cut in half and by how much?

It varies by state. Typically you can still collect unemployment if you find a part-time job, but it will likely be reduced. Talk to the unemployment comp people in your state - they can advise you.

In general to receive unemployement you have to be "seeking full time employment". If you are working part time or going to school they assume that you are not available to work full time and therefore cannot be "seeking full time employment". The checks stop. Now you do not have to accept part time employment if it is offered and if you would get less working part time than you currently get in unemployment you should pass on the part time work and keep looking for the full time. It take full time effort to find a full time job and once you start giving up 20 hours a week in part time your going to have a hard time finding a full time job.

I think once you begin to get paid again even if it is part time your unemployment stops

I think they stop paying you unemployment.. because you're working again of course... but be careful because you can only have one case open a year..
