Yes, 170 at 5'4 is definitely overweight, a goal of 140 would be appropiate. I wouldn't count on green tea, though it doesn't hurt as long as you don't have high blood pressure. I'm not sure your age, but you should have a physical exam before starting any diet to see where you are health wise. Going for a daily walk of 30-45 minutes every day will definitely jump start your metabolism and help burn off the fat while improving your endurance and overall health. You should be taking in at least 800 calories, but try to stay under 1500 during the weight loss phase. You can eat lots of veggies, limited fruits (high in sugar), a few servings of whole grains (oatmeal, wheat bread, brown rice), some beans, lean meats (fish, turkey, skinless chicken, well-trimmed pork chops/steak, egg whites) and skim milk/light yogurt. Stay away from anything fried, breaded, saucy, cheesy and juices (very high in sugar). If you follow this plan you should be able to lose the 30 pounds by the end of 2007. To get in even better shape I highly recommend 2-3 days of weight training (45 minutes sessions) to improve your tone/strength and prevent the loss of too much muscle during your weight loss.

The standard calorie intake for a person to lose 1-2 lbs a week is 1200-1500. This is just a standard. Everyone is different and the amount of calories you'll need will vary depending on your metabolism and your activity level. As the previous posted mentioned, you should never eat below 1200 calories for and extended period. This will cause your body to go into starvation mode and hoard fat. There are no foods you should completely avoid while trying to lose weight. Anything in moderation is ok for you. Probably the best thing you can do is learn about portion sizes. Sparkpeople.com is a good resourse for this. Also eat a lot of whole grains, fruits, veggies and lean meats. They will fill you up on less calories than thier fatier counterparts. Most importantly drink water!!

Try and avoid calorie counting unless nothing else works for you - it's easy to become obsessed and miss the big picture. Instead, cut out sugar and replace with sweetner if you need to, and check the sugar/fat content of any prepackaged foods you buy.

Where-ever possible, cook from fresh using loads of fresh fruit and vegetables. Cut back on, but don't cut out, carbs, and switch to unrefined versions - wholegrain bread, wholewheat pasta, brown rice etc. Check your portion sizes, and listen to your body. Eat slowly, put your fork down between mouthfuls and stop when you're full.

If (like me) you're a boredom eater, make sure you snack on carrot sticks and hummous, cherry tomatoes, cucumber etc, but again try and listen to your body and only eat if you're actually hungry. Sugarfree gum is another good trick!

If you are eating a healthy balanced diet, and getting exercise, you should settle naturally into your healthy weight range. But if you really want to count calories, a weight loss regime usually recommends about 1350 per day, while a maintenance diet is around 1800 - 2000 for a woman. Just make sure the calories you are eating are the right ones (but don't stress over the occasional cake or biscuit!)

Good luck, hope it goes well.

You can use this site to determine what your calorie intake should be, based on your size and activity level, for you to lose weight

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

It has other calculators also for ideal weight range, calories burned during certain activities, etc.

Do not go below 1200 cals a day w/o a doc's approval...and avoid junk food, sweets, sodas, fast food, and things with emtpy calories. Focus on lean meats, fresh fruits and veggies, whole grain products, and lots of water. ☺
