Depression can be treated without prescription meds - but don't let the pharm companies hear me say that.
First natural remedy - eat right, sleep right, and exercise. It's that simple.
Then, stay away from depressing things, and try to be happier more often.
You can take herbs and supplements - like St. Johns Wort, Sam-E, and other stuff. And marijuana works well too.

St Johns Wart is a type of anti-depressent that you can get over the counter and I have been told that it does work...I use to work at a Rx store and I had many people tell me how well it works.....But I believe it depends on the exstent of the depression I would say talk to your Dr.

If you have transportation, go look up "clinical trials". There's lots of places that will let you participate in clinical trials testing new depression medications.
It may involve silly things like the occasional blood draw (I'm afraid of needles and I can do it, so can you), peeing in a cup, saliva samples, but you also get free medicine (or placebo), you get PAID money, you get a free physical (they make sure your thyroid isn't bad, etc), to talk to a councilor. And you help science and help humanity in the process.
I'm nearing the end of my clinical trials and their doctors are going to write me a perscription for an anti-depressant of my choice. I'm not having to pay to get help from this doctor. (And they'll also provide me with samples for two months and other stuff.)
The doctor I talked to last week said there's an anti-depressant called Celexa (Citalopram) which is a previous version of Lexipro (Escitalopram) and it can be gotten generic with perscription for about 4 dollars a month without insurance.

DHEA, or ST John's Wort have both been used effectively to help with depression. What you need to understand is that anything taken for depression only serves to replace missing neurochemicals so you can think more clearly, they are not happy pills by any stretch of the imagination. If you do not also seek some sort of therapy, your depression will persist.

You can get St. Johns Wart from just about any store, but that will only help if you have the mildest form of depression out there.
