Here are some good Scriptures:

Acts 1:9-11, Revelation 1:7, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17

You have an excellent opportunity to enlighten your friend about something he may not know.

He probably thinks that Jehovah's Witnesses - even before 1914 - thought that Jesus would return in 1914 and when WWI began, they thought it was the beginning of Armageddon, and that they were correct about 1914.

That isn't the case at all. Jehovahs Witnesses (or Bible Students, as they were known then) had been proclaiming to the world since 1879 that Jesus had came back in 1874 in an invisible body. They thought he was here in the earth, supervising the gathering together of the "saints" to take them to heaven in 1914 and then destroy all the governments of the world. They were sure that , after 1914, no other government would rule the earth, except God's government, or Kingdom, by Jesus Christ. So when the Gentile nations no longer ruled the earth, that would be the end of the "Gentile Times." But as you can plainly see, nothing changed. When World War I ended, the Gentile Nations still ruled the earth just as they did prior to 1914.

It didn't happen but - being human - they didn't want to believe they were wrong. So they found a way to try to make what actually happened, fit in with what they said would happen. So they changed a lot of their teachings, and many JW's don't even know that they were wrong about 1914. They changed from saying that he returned invisibly in 1874 to saying that he returned invisibly in 1914. They believe the WT was right all along, because the WT says so.

Tell him to read pages 46 and 47 of his Proclaimers Book, if he doesn't believe you.

Show him more than that. All the prophecies concerning the 2nd Coming make it clear that there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars as well as wars and plagues and disasters on earth. All these things in conjunction with the forming of a One World Government[The U.N.] and a One World Religion[New Age Spirituality headed by Rome]signal the soon return of Jesus in the clouds. Also, point out that the 144,000 in Revelation is a symbolic number pertaining to all saved souls in history. The book says at the outset that it is signed and signified. We are in the Last Days. Many false christs are appearing.Jesus Christ is coming to conquer and Judge. He is not walking around the earth trying to unite humanity.

Hi Dwayne,

I am sending you some links to several article which discuss the very thing your friend is talking about and maybe you can understand where he is coming from better.

Do we need a Messiah?
http://www.watchtower.org/e/20060215/article_01.htm

Daniel 2:44
44 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite

What does the Messiah's coming mean to you?

Here are a few of the paragraphs in one of the articles:

A Chance Fulfillment in Jesus?
Still, is it possible that Jesus’ fulfilling Messianic prophecies was mere coincidence? In an interview, one scholar answered: “Not a chance. The odds are so astronomical that they rule that out. Someone did the math and figured out that the probability of just eight prophecies being fulfilled is one chance in one hundred million billion.” Putting those odds in perspective, he stated: “If you took this number of silver dollars, they would cover the state of Texas [an area of 266,807 square miles] to a depth of two feet. If you marked one silver dollar among them and then had a blindfolded person wander the whole state and bend down to pick up one coin, what would be the odds he’d choose the one that had been marked?” He then stated that those are “the same odds that anybody in history could have fulfilled just eight of the [Messianic] prophecies.”

Yet, during his three-and-a-half-year ministry, Jesus fulfilled not just eight but many Bible prophecies. In view of such overwhelming evidence, that scholar concluded: “Jesus—and only Jesus throughout all of history—managed to do it.

A careful study of Bible prophecies has convinced reasoning people around the globe that the Messiah came in the first century and that he was to return. Evidence establishes that his foretold return, the beginning of his “presence,” occurred in 1914.# (Matthew 24:3-14) In that year, Jesus was invisibly enthroned in the heavens as the King of God’s Kingdom. Shortly, he will act to rid the earth of the effects of the rebellion in Eden. His subsequent Thousand Year Reign will bless all those manifesting faith in him as the promised Seed, the Messiah, who “takes away the sin of the world.”—John 1:29; Revelation 21:3, 4.

Look up the scriptures or click on the links in blue and they will take you to the bible. You can use your own copy of the bible. Read any links and you can continue your search for information.

Jesus is already ruling in his heavenly realm and is preparing for Jehovah's day of judgement foretold at the end of this system of things at Armagedon when wickedness is brought to an end.

Lexicon Results for parousia (Strong's G3952) Greek for G3952

1) presence

2) the coming, arrival, advent

Please note the word most bible translate as coming (2)

the first definition is presence.

Second, Jesus 'comes' on the clouds.

On cloudy days you can hear the presence of the airplane flying overhead, but you can not see it.

the sound is the sign of the plane's presence.

The fulfillment of Matt 24 are the signs of Jesus' presence.

1 Tim 6:14 that you observe the commandment in a spotless and irreprehensible way until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 This [manifestation] the happy and only Potentate will show in its own appointed times, [he] the King of those who rule as kings and Lord of those who rule as lords, 16 the one alone having immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom not one of men has seen or can see.

Verse 16 tells us that at Jesus' manifestation or presence
No man can see him.

Why because Jesus is in heaven a powerful spirit creature.

hopefully this will help you ... there are many scriptures which work together & must be put together. here are a few:

matt. 24: 29-30 tells when Jesus' 2nd coming will happen ...

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days
shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

(note: 2 Thessalonians 2:4 agrees with Matthew 24 and Daniel 9:27 in saying the antichrist will sit in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
Matthew 24 says that when the anti-christ stands in this holy place the tribulation begins.
The "great tribulation" is satan's wrath.
it is the last 3 1/2 years of the final 7 years before the Battle of Armageddon ... it will be the greatest political and religious persecution in the history of the world.... in which the anti-christ & false prophet reign. This 3 1/2 years of Great Tribulation will continue until the final Battle of Armageddon.
Scripture tells us that not only Jesus spoke of a catching-away of the saints after the tribulation, but the apostles taught it as well.)

the next scripture, matt. 24:31 says the church or elect (born-again believers) will then be "caught up or raptured" ....

"And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."

2 thess. 2:8-9 says Jesus will come after the revealing of the anti-christ ....

"And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him (Jesus), whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders."

A quick review of endtime events:
- the great tribulation is Satan's wrath. (Rev. 12) This wrath begins 3 1/2 years into Daniel's seventieth week, beginning with the abomination of desolation (when satan stands in the rebuilt Jewish temple proclaiming he is God).
- The 3rd Jewish temple is rebuilt and standing at this 3 1/2 year marker. The temple mount is shared by Jew and Gentile for 3 1/2 years. (Rev. 11:1-2)
- The anti-christ stands in the temple proclaiming that he is God. (2 Thess. 2:3-4) This is known as the abomination of desolation. (Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11)
- At the time the antichrist makes this abomination, those who live in the area of Judea are warned to flee for their lives. The antichrist begins his carnage on God's people. (Matt. 24:15-21)
- This great tribulation lasts for 3 1/2 years, ending with the return of Jesus Christ and the Battle of Armageddon. ((Dan. 7:25, 12:6, 12:11, 13:5)
- At the return of Jesus Christ, and the sounding of the seventh or last trumpet (1 Cor. 15:52),
- the saints are caught up to meet Jesus in the clouds ( 1 Thess. 4:17)
- and go with Him to Jerusalem (to the Mount of Olives) (Zech. 14:4)
- and to the Battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:16)

2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

Revelation 1:7-8 Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

In hindsight, most of humankind can see the historic upheaval that began with World War I. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that mankind in general has seen a wide range of specific signs since 1914, and that anyone can perceive these as significant without even opening a bible.

Yet the bible DOES comment upon it! Jesus foretold this specific collection of signs as evidence that his "presence" or so-called 'second coming' had arrived. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that "presence" to be Jesus' presence as the King of God's Kingdom.

(Matthew 24:3) disciples approached [Jesus] privately, saying: "Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence

(Luke 21:7,24) Teacher, when will these things actually be, and what will be the sign when these things are destined to occur?

Amazingly, since the 1870's, Jehovah's Witnesses had recognized 1914 as a significant year according to the chronology indicated in bible prophecy. Decades before 1914, Witnesses noted that Jesus' discussion of his second "coming", or second "presence" specifically mentions "the appointed times of the nations", which Jehovah's Witnesses believe to be a centuries-long period of relative godlessness when God's rulership through the Davidic kingship was interrupted (the line of hereditary kings beginning with King David of Israel). Jehovah's Witnesses recognize that the Davidic kingship ended in 607 BCE when Jerusalem fell to Babylon, and would begin again during the fulfillment of the composite "sign" of Matthew 24 and Luke 21.

(Luke 21:24) Jerusalem [or 'Davidic kingship'] will be trampled on by the nations, until the appointed times of the nations are fulfilled.

How long would "the appointed times of the nations" last? Daniel chapter 4 contains a prophecy in which God's rulership, through the Davidic kings is represented by a "tree". That tree is kept down for "seven times", which seems to be seven periods of 360 "days" (See Rev 12:6,14). So Daniel 4:15 seems to be referring to 2520 "days" when God's governmental rulership would not be seen.

(Daniel 4:11-17) The tree grew up and became strong, and its very height finally reached the heavens, and it was visible to the extremity of the whole earth. ...14 He ["a holy one"] was calling out loudly, and this is what he was saying: "CHOP the tree down... 15 However, LEAVE its rootstock itself in the earth... let seven times pass over it. 17 ...that people living may know that the Most High is Ruler in the kingdom of mankind and that to the one whom he wants to, he gives it and he sets up over it even the lowliest one of mankind.

But in history, 2520 days is not a significant amount of time. Jehovah's Witnesses look to Scriptures such as Num 14:34 and Ez 4:6 and re-examine the history using 2520 YEARS instead. From 607 BCE to 1914 CE is 2520 years; so many significant things happened that year, and World War I was only one part!.
