It seems like my new 7 month old puppy is constantly sleeping, is this ok or something unusual? Also, because it is always sleeping, it seems as if I can never train it to come, sit, stay or anything because it never hears me talking when it is sleeping. I'm hoping to teach it these things before it becomes too old.

I'd ask my vet and my breeder. It can be because something is wrong, or because it's a habit if he's usually left alone that time of day... several things? shih tzus are very laid back espec if an only dog, but terriers are more wired.

U can wake him/her up, go out to do the business, then go for a little walk. this should wake him up and tire him out at the same time. just a short walk or a little play with a favorit toy will sufficiently get him awake and tired enough to focus a little better, instead of being so distracted, for u to practice a little training. Good Luck!

Did you recieve this pup from a pet store, newspaper ad, or internet ad? There are chances this puppy has come from a horrible place called a puppy mill (and this is most likely the case if you recieved it from a pet store). Because of the conditions of the dogs in these operations, the puppies (often taken away from their mother much too early) may experience many health and behavioral problems. Check out this site for more information... www.puppymillrescue.com

I hope there's not anything majorly wrong with your puppy! Good luck! ^_^

I know older cats sleep a lot and older dogs like to sleep a lot; but kittens and puppies usually like running around playing .Have you been walking him a couple times a day and playing with him with his toys... puppies tend to get board and need lots of activities to let them enjoy being a puppy.I would get him checked at the vets as it doesn;t sound normal ' especially for a puppy.Another thing is he might be really depressed as that's when animals sleep lots and don;t want to move at all just like in humans... get your puppy checked out asap to find out what;s going on with him., good luck .,

I have a 10 year old Shih Tzu and I can tell you that his whole day is spent in his chair sleeping. He has a few minutes of play time in the evening and then he is off to bed and he doesn't wiggle again until morning. I can only assume that he is so bored he has become comatose. Try some squeaky toys. My dog would stay awake for that.

If you feel that something may be wrong with your puppy, take him/her to their veternarian.Younger puppies sleep a lot,but if yours is 7 months old,he/she shouldn't be quite sleeping that much.Definitely take him/her for a check up,and voice your concerns to the doc. They'll be able to answer any questions and concerns about the new addition to your family and give you some healthy and friendly tips on training him! :) Good luck and congratulations!

it's good that it's getting sleep, but it should also be active! at only 7 months it prolly will sleep more then play! just wait a little longer and it will get better! try to either hire a dog trianer or go to puppy school! they help ALOT with the training thing!

have you spoken to the vet about how much he should be sleeping? its possible that he has something wrong with him. what does he do when you wake him up and try to interact with him? try talking to your vet about it. they should be able to help you.
