If they are registered somewhere, then send a gift card for an amount like $30 or so. That's what people sent when they didn't come to my wedding.

What you spend depends on what you can afford and how close you are to the couple.

In this case, you could give a small gift from the registry (since you don't know the couple that well). Most registries will have smaller items (cutting boards, baking sheets, etc.) that you can have shipped directly to the couple. In the space where you add a greeting congratulate them/wish them well and thank them for their invitation/let them know you are sorry you can't make it.

Of course, you should also fill out the RSVP card and let them know you're not attending.

Whatever you can afford, seriously! If you can only afford to send them $20, then that's what they get.

If they're registered, many online registries will ship gifts from the registry for free. Check if they're registered at Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, WalMart, Williams Sonoma, etc. I'll bet they're registered at least at 1 of those stores.

Send a nice card and give $30 or $50.

I think $50 is a great gift...but I would probably give less if I didn't attend.

How about just a card with some sincere thoughts of yours and maybe a little cash in lieu of a gift.

If you are having hard time I'd say anything is the thought that counts 25 or 50 unless you have bigger pockets and can afford 100.

You don't have to send them a gift but if you want to, see if they have a registry and buy something nice but small from there.

A $25 gift card would be enough for someone you are not close to.
