Many times it is how they where brought up. They didn't get the love they wanted as a child so they don't know how to give it. Also they where taught to be a fanatic and think they have the only true way so they carry that on in their understanding. Most things come from training or emulating others who brought us up as children. (Parents, children, siblings, friends, teachers, ministers, etc.)

You know... self-cherishment gets in the way with some and others might just be joking around with no intent of "disrespect". It's all in the perception.
