So Men & Women go on Missions in the Mormon Church?

I was told the Men are called Elders? What qualifies them as Elders & what are the Women called?

Women are called Sister's. As in Sister Jones, or Sister Smith, etc.
Men are called Elder's because they are ordained an Elder before they leave on their mission. What qualifies them? Their ordination to Elder is as an Elder in the Priesthood. There are different offices within the Priesthood, among them Elder. Other offices include deacon, and teacher. There are responsibilities associated with each office. The responsibilities of an Elder include to perform those duties that priests, teachers and deacons are responsible for, as well as: " 38 The duty of the elders, priests, teachers, deacons, and members of the church of Christ—An apostle is an elder, and it is his calling to baptize;
39 And to ordain other elders, priests, teachers, and deacons;
40 And to administer bread and wine—the emblems of the flesh and blood of Christ—
41 And to confirm those who are baptized into the church, by the laying on of hands for the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost, according to the scriptures;
42 And to teach, expound, exhort, baptize, and watch over the church;
43 And to confirm the church by the laying on of the hands, and the giving of the Holy Ghost;
44 And to take the lead of all meetings.
45 The elders are to conduct the meetings as they are led by the Holy Ghost, according to the commandments and revelations of God. " D&C 20

Mormons believe that Elder is an office of the priesthood. They use that title when they are working on church business. The women are called sister. So is John and Mary Smith go on missions they would be called Elder Smith and Sister Smith.. Jim

Both men and women can go on missions. It is entirely a voluntary thing. And, each missionary pays their own way. They are not supported financially at all by the Church.

Elder is a designation in the Melchizedek Priesthood...a rank, if you will. Each designation has certain responsibilities and duties which accompany it. In the case of the missionaries, "Elder" is also a term of respect and a title like "Mister" or "Doctor".

I wouldn't consider them Men and Women. More like Young and naive, vulnerable, and completely brainwashed kids. I feel sorry for them. Yes the boys are 19 and the girls are 21. But they aren't old enough to know better. They're only doing what they have been told they have to do their entire life. A mission is this ultimate 'quest' to them. You very rarely see a missionary that is older than 24 (Unless you're talking about an Older Couple set of missionaries).
