It might be surprising, but it is one of the fe places in the country where single straight women out number single straight guys (guessing the gay population doesn't matter to you since you ask men vs women).
Single men with good jobs are in HUGE demand here (NYC has a large fashion industry that is mostly straight women and gay men). If you are a guy, you will have NO PROBLEM meeting women. As for women, I feel sorry for them. There are so few men, and the men know it, so a lot of the guys try and keep more than one woman around!!!

I agree with the previous poster.
I assume that you're referring to straight men vs. straight women (NYC is a very diverse and welcoming city, so this city is home to every sexuality). Overall I'd say there are definitely more (straight) women than (straight) men in this city.
However, some parts of the city, such as the Financial District and Battery City have a disproportionate number of men living in the community due to the proximity to the (traditionally male) financial jobs.

Don't know the real statistics, but when you go to a bar or a lounge, it always feels like the guys outnumber the girls 2:1. Also, I guess that's why places like to let in the women in large groups, to attract guys.
