That's actually a good question! I've never really thought about it before, but here's a couple guesses. The B.A.S.S. rules are basically the same for both amateur and professional events. The Federation (amateur) tournaments are a boater / non boater setup. It would be rather difficult for two guys to fly fish from a bass boat without getting in each others way. The other guess is that they set up the rules stating casting and spinning rigs only to level the competition, so everyone is basically doing the same thing.

When the competition was first started along time ago (30 -40 )years or so. the bass fisherman that made up the rules didn't know how to used a fly rod and didn't think you could catch a bass any other way but with a casting rod and a level wind-reel .. Thay did make a change when spinning rod's and reel's gain popularity . I call it the southern persuasion... The southern Pro. bass fisherman have just started about 5 years ago trying to learn how to used a fly rod.. and fishing in the North .. Who is it ? he says Son all the time SON ! you know , Is it Roland Martin ? .I,ve been using one for 55 years and caught , all of the Northern fish on a fly rod ,from bluegill to salmon.. Hope this help's you.... Fish on

I had to look back over the rules just to be certain, but I found nothing that disqualifies fishing for bass with flies during competition, however, the only permitted use of fishing is by casting or spinning rod. Therefore no flyrodding is allowed. I hope that helps.
Here are the rules:

I would have thought that over the years they may change but not as yet to allow the fly rod use!
In my stores I tyed 4" to 10" minnows, leechs and bugs and I sold hundreds of them to the guys that bass fished with the fly rod.Maybe we have to start up a fly rod tournement "The Orvis Fly Bass Classic's now that would be great!

I don't know, but I saw a guy catch a 9 1/4 pound bass on a flyrod in Mississippi. It was just a couple of ounces off the state record!
