You'll probably get a wide definition and interpetation of what is a cult and what is a religion. My rule of thumb is whether the group lasts several lifetimes, doesn't encourage their members to irrationally harm themselves (death, selling all posessions and living in a field etc..) or use high pressure tactics to recruit and keep members.

Yes you might say that .If you've gotten one individual who claims to be the only and simplest son of god then we've an abomination that's unnatural in relation to real spirituality. When you've gotten a institution of humans who're so mind washed as to feel that their chief is the author of the universe and or a messenger from god and is located on a pedestal then we've a cult of the more severe variety. Just learn approximately Jim Jones and you are going to get a well concept of what's a cult is like.We can now all appear ahead to an overly vibrant long term as those cults will likely be obvious as they real are and the fake teachings they cram down their fans throat.I discover the entire factor very sickening and disgusting

The word "cult" is mostly used by us Christians to define a person or group of people who teach non Christian or non Biblical doctrine. Usually groups that claim Christianity. The Westboro Baptist would be a great example.
(Numbers)
Cult = 2 or more minimum
Religion = 2 or more people teaching "accepted" doctrine or beliefs.
The largest cult today would be Mormons. Closely followed by Jehovah Witnesses. According to main stream Christianity.

A cult and a religion are two different things, although a cult often claims to be religious. A cult is an obsessive society/group centered around two or three leaders who are often out to get all the member's money and possessions.

I think a cult becomes a religion when it's recognized officially as a religion of a certain group of people.

Beats me but I'm starting my own religion. Two Gods one called Lardicus and the other called Dieteis. Lardicus is the God of fast food, he's the serpent. Dieteis is the Goddess of health food and supplements she's the good one. I am a devout follower of Lardicus and love my McNuggets with sweet and sour sauce of course. Anyone want to join my religion? I'm a total sinner and it's awesome!

It's got nothing to do with size and everything to do with general freedoms.
The military is basically a cult.
I know, I was drafted into it and told all about "Charlie" and how "Charlie" was out to get me.
I was told when to go to bed. When to wake up. How to make my footlocker. I had to get permission to leave the area.

I don't think it is a matter of raw numbers so much as length of existence and the degree of public relations.
