lulu muffin.......but were these references refering to someone called Jesus, or someone with a similar name?

When this has been raised before, the evidence has been found wanting. There were thousands of jews cricified every year, surely it's only to be expected that some may have circumstances that seem similar to what people are looking for.

Do you have any links or references for the evidence?

I'd be curious to have a closer look.

lulu muffin.........I just checked your link. It's unfortunate that it's a christian based website you've chosen.

The opening line was unfortunate when it made the sweeping statement that the new testament has been proved historicly accurate when it contains so many historical contradictions.

If you believe in God, which you should, the irrefutable evidence that his Son came to be among us, teach us , then died on the cross for your sins is simply the fact that God hasn't destroyed us all due to our sin-full defiance of his commandments.

(See Old Testament and note how The Lord handled sinners)

Being quite honest, it is hard to find unbiased sources. When looking this up for curiositys sake nearly all of the pro-jesus sites were from christian apologetis while all of the anti-jesus listings were from atheists.

However, after reading through volumes of text on the net about this, i have to say thet there really isnt much evidence. There are no documents that name jesus that originate in the time of his life. A man who is saif to have had the impact and influence of jesus would have produced some documents that mention him, or describe him, or crroborate some of the bible. There is none of this.

The links I have listed below might be considered biased, but they present a factual and realistic account of the facts. They are detailed and fair which is more than I can say for a good number of the apooloigetics sites I looked at.

Its is more than likely that the historical jesus did not exist, and he is a combination of earlier myth figures creted to expand on the old testament.

You are absolutely correct in your suspicions that JESUS IS A MYTH.

First of all, the Bible is considered by most scholars to be a piece of religious LITERATURE. There are thousands of examples of error in the bible in terms of its understanding of history and of nature. It cannot be taken seriously as a historical document any more than it can be taken seriously as a means of understanding reality. Sheesh, the writers of the bible not only didn't appear to know that the world is a round planet in space and that it orbits the sun; there is nothing in it to suggest that they knew anything of the Americas or the peoples there.

As to the non-Christian sources that Christians always point to for proof of Jesus, such as Josephus...Josephus lived well after Jesus' alleged death and his report about Jesus and Christians reads more like a hearsay account of a phenomenon something akin to "Hey, you'll never believe it. There's the crazy group of semi-jews in Judea and they believe their rabbi died and rose from the dead way back when. What kooks!" Josephus and other non-Christian sources not only recognize a myth as a myth; they don't find it particularly interesting or meaningful. Just kinda silly.

Finally, as to the Roman records: the Romans as history's first super-bureaucrats kept records on everything, including executions. Pontius Pilate was a brutal dictator who exterminated thousands of people in Judea during his reign of terror. His rule was so extreme that eventually the emperor had him recalled to Rome for fear that his brutality was destabilizing Judea. He was not the petulant milquetoast that the bible mistakenly paints him to be. And, there are records of every single person he had executed. Sorry, there is no mention of a radical, lunatic rabbi who claimed to be the messiah or anything magickal or whatever.

THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE DOCUMENTATION OR EVIDENCE TO PROVE THE EXISTENCE OF JESUS.

The thing you probably won't accept is that the Bible is considered a historical document and the evidence about Jesus is considered valid.

We have more information and writings concerning the existence of Jesus then we do of Caesar. Yet because those writing are the "Bible" many non-Christian's discount this as evidence. But in actuality is good, well-documented evidence.

no history major, or institution will deny his existence, people do debate his abilities though. the romans did have records that said he did things that could not be explained. the romans also never lost a body that they cared to protect, and they had more protection on jesus than anyone else, and go figure he would be the one body that came up missing. christians will say that an angel put the guards to sleep (falling asleep was punishable by death, and there were several guards that did it at the same time) and rolled away the stone. the deciples were accounted for in the city...and for just existance purposes....there's more historical proof that jesus existed than there is for napolean. that is because jesus was more interesting in his time to the romans... i think that says there was def something special about jesus...also does anyone think it quiet weird that our calendar (the year) is based off the life of jesus? ... if you want so much hard proof, why don't you look for it instead of asking us... we have enough for our own belief, now take care of yours.

Please prove that Alexander the great existed?

Aah. Historical record?

The bible and especially the writings of the very early church are some of the best preserved historical records.

Look at secular historian's views on the Letters of St Paul.

Now, as to whether he was an influential guy or God is a matter of faith. There is basically no contention amongst scholars, religious or not, that Jesus existed.

My donkey says to Missing Link:

Even if you saw Jesus heal the sick, raise the dead and, in fact, rise from the grave, you would not believe the evidence, and continue to persecute believers.

Why, because it is hidden from the self-sufficient and revealed to those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.

You will recall that Jesus said the prostitutes and traitors would enter the kingdom before the religious bigots. Yes, they would be here arguing theology on R&S, but that forceful personality kept them from understanding the truth.

You see, the Prophets and Jesus spoke spoke in parables just to confuse those He does not want ruining the peace of His church and Heaven.

That is why the last-day Bible code says: The wicked will do wickedly but none of the wicked will understand, but the Wise Shall Understand.

Thus says Buritto, my donkey.

It seems that the general Christian understanding of historical evidence is as weak as their understanding of evolution.

But enough was written about the man (who, regardless of any deity worship has had the greatest effect on mankind) as to all but ensure that he once lived and died in the manner described.
