If I had seen this question about 5 years ago I would have said an Old English Sheep dog. A big lovable dunce. Still a great family dog. Takes a lot of grooming.
But now I would have to go with an APBT. They are a family dog from the word go. They were the most popular dog from the '20s to the '60s. Then they started to get a bad reputation. They are not "killers"! Over the last 50 years I have had many dogs. I would say that the Pit I have now is the most lovable, people friendly dog I have ever had. Even beats out the Old English Sheep dog.
My Pit is an indoor dog and lives with me and my two other dogs.
There is a reason why they were called the "Nanny Dog", they are great with children.
The first time my daughter brought my grandson over, one month old, she sat him on the floor in his carrier and the Pit went over to check him out and then stayed by his the side the whole time he was there. She would not leave his side.
Now when she comes over the Pit does not leave his side and lets him pull on her ears and play with her face she just licks his hand.
You could not do better than an APBT.

My kids are 9 and 5. Our nightly routine is Eat dinner as a family at 530-6. Not much happens between 6 and 8. I have class 2 nights a week from about 645-730, my husband has class the other 2 nights a week and doesn't get home until 730. The 5 year old gets PJ's on and brushes teeth between 730-745 and is in bed by 8. The 9 year old gets PJ's on and brushes teeth around 8 and is in bed by 830. You know what is best for your kids and each family must make their own routine. It sounds like you have a perfect routine. But if you feel you need to change it then try it. If it doesn't work, then change it back.

I have a German Short Haired Pointer, and she is the best thing that ever happened to our family. I have 4 kids 4, 10, 12, and 14, and I got Emma (my dog) 5 years ago. She loves all the kids, was super patient with the little one when he was climbing all over her, and is awesome with my cats.
She is active, but when you're ready to settle down, she is too. She loves snuggling, and being a lazy bones; and is happy to go down to our local park for a swim in the warm months .And for the most part she was super easy to housebreak, and obedience train.
I would reccomend this breed to anyone who has kids, and wants a dog that is sturdy enough to handle the rough and tumble play with kids, but not so big that they are invaisive. They have a smooth, short coat and are a breeze to groom (a good rub down with a hound mitt will suffice).
Do your research, and take your time, but I would look into a German Short Haired Pointer. They are wonderful, amazing pets.

My ace in the hole breed on friendliness lately has been the cavalier king charles spaniel. [ smaller dog]
but they are loaded with health issues.
I would suggest you look for an adult dog through rescue, since an ADULT dog who LOVES kids, will remain loving them, whereas all puppies love everyone, they can often grow up to be LESS friendly and tolerant of certain things like kids.
some breeds known for friendliness or hunting/working might be better choices than say breeds for flock guarding, or protection.
remember that while you may choose to "RAISE" the dog however you want, the dog's breed has been selected over and over for centuries to provide the OTHER traits it's meant to be used for, like guarding or protection in those examples.
BUT, i still think some of the nicest dogs i've met with kids were rotties and dobermans! so go figure.

Get a lab. I raised 3 boys with a lab that we had for 16 years before he passed. He was the best dog in the world !!!!. Great in the house doesn`t shed alot and as far as the kids go he was EXCELLENT with them. didn`t have a mean bone in his body but would defend the kids from anything. We lived in the country and he went EVERYWHERE with the boys even the bus stop every morning and met hem there every evining. He kept snakes, and other dogs away from he boys when they were away from the house.. Thery have a great temperment mind very well and learn fast and LOVE to ride in the car. plus great protection at night in the house.

I would personally recommend a doberman, but my other recommendation is to go to www.dogbreedinfo.com they have a breed selector quiz based on the size of dog you want, the size of your house, how much time for exercise, grooming and the like. It will match you with a breed that meets those criteria, but just remember, all dogs are individual. I have 2 dobermans, and they are the most fantastic dogs i have ever owned, great with my 2 kids, aged 4 and 2, easy to train, happy to be with you, intelligent, low maintenance, and did i mention great with my kids, so patient with them, more than i am sorry to say. But try the breed selector quiz, you might be surprised with what comes up.

beagles are very good with kids and enjoy activities and are good indoor dogs.they are very loyal also i had 2 strays that were with us for a while and they fit in with my kids perfectly except they are hunting dogs by nature. they will hunt till they drop.these dogs were trained that way but if you get a young one you will have a great pet. they do not need a lot of grooming either. what ever you pick have fun and enjoy the new member of your family.

I have a cocker spaniel that is just perfect for all you have mentioned. He is great with kids and energetic and good inside and loves to ride. He is the smartest dog I have ever owned and does what we tell him too as if he knows what we say. He fetches and we never taught him too , just did it the first time we played it with him. This is really a great breed.

BOXER. They are fantastic family pets and very protective of children. We had one that used to get between the fireplace and stairs and the baby when he started walking. Very attentive.
They are chewers for the first 2 years, though, so just do some research and be prepared.
