Although its been many years since I viewed the film, she is probably postulant -- a woman who lives with a religious community (usually for 6 months to 1 year) to discern whether or not she is really suited for religious life with that particular community. It's sort of like a "trial run." If she decides to stay with the community, then she becomes a novice -- usually for 1-2 years, which means she is more seriously considering staying. Then, she takes temporary vows, which are usually renewed after 3-5 years ... at the end of her temporary vows, if she so chooses, she takes permanent vows.
Religious orders, at least in Catholicism, offer many opportunities to "back out" before the commitment is for life.

She was a novice, she was not yet a full nun. She was in a period of being trained and made ready for her life ahead. What she is in training for is to be God's wife. She was just engaged, or whatever they call it. She had not taken her final vows yet. She still needed to "marry" God. As this Church all wore traditional garb, she was not just simply dressing as she chose, she was in a novice habit. Nuns actually wear a simple wedding ring upon marrying God.
I wonder why ppl have a need to respond as though they know the answer? Some of them were partially right though. Many times catholics do not know everything about their own religion, oh well, guess that's not just limited to catholics.

All of the above look good to me. When a woman decides to be a Nun she enters the convent and goes through steps of preparation, taking certain vows as she goes. It usually takes a few years living in community before she has learned enough and lived within in the cloister as those Nuns did to make her final decision. When the time, training and preparation are complete she is allowed to take her final vows and wear the full habit. Before taking her final vows she has the option of leaving the cloister at any time. When she takes her final vows she will spend the rest of her life with her sisters doing God's work.

Probably a novice,a woman who has not yet taken temporary vows which are some years before final vows. She could be a postulant, the step after observer and before novice(which comes from the Latin nova"New One' as in "new at it"). The clothes of a nun are called a habit and novices and often postulants wear something different from that of the "professed'(those in vows).
Many orders wear "lay clothes" nowadays and some wear a blouse and dark skirt often with a smaller"babuska-like" or scarf-type veil. Some orders still wear a particular color or combination of colors and special medals or pins of their order or congregation.

I believe she was a novice(or even a postulant, depending on the order) in the movie, but since Vatican II allowed orders to either modify or completely eliminate their habits, some orders allow individual nuns to choose which to wear. Some wear the old habits, some a modified habit, and some wear civilian clothes which convey a somber attitude.
Anyway, don't look to Hollywood for reality on convents or nuns! LOL

I don't know why that particular nun did. Most religious orders of nuns have thier own habit (dress) to distinguish them from each other, however sometimes even within a convent sisters will wear different forms of the habit.

If she's a novice, she'd be dressed differently. Can't wear the habit of the nuns until she's finished training and has been thru the ceremony to accept her into sisterhood.

She was probably a postulant or novice -- in other words, a sister who had not yet taken her final vows. It's a period of training and discernment when those who wish to join an order participate in the life of the community to see if they're suited for it before they make a permanent commitment.
