You have a container of grapes, a container of olives, and a container of grapes and olives. All three containers are mislabeled. What is the minimum number of tastings required to identify all three containers, and what order would you choose? Assume that you have no other clues, such as smelling or looking in the containers. Also, only one grape or olive is withdrawn for tasting.

shazam is close, but he needs to say which container he picks first, and then how he would determine the identity of the other containers

One tasting is required. The main clue is that each container is mislabeled. Sample the "grapes & olives" first. Since it is mislabeled, you know that it can't contain more than one type of fruit. If you get an olive, then
the "grapes & olives" are really olives
the "grapes" are really "grapes & olives" (they can't be grapes or olives)
the "olives" are really grapes.
If you get a grape, then:
the "grapes & olives" are really grapes
the "olives" are really grapes & olives (they can't be grapes or olives)
the "grapes" are really olives

The minimum number of tastings would be 3. If you first pick an olive from container 1, then a grape from container 1 you know that container 1 is the container of grapes and olives. Whether you taste an olive or grape from container 2 will tell you if that container contains only olives or grapes. You know the 3rd container contains whichever is left.

The minimum? That would be three!
1) pick random container and eat either grape or olive.
2) pick from the same container, you happen to get opposite of what you got from the first. You now know this is the mixed bucket.
3) pick something from another container... say a grape. Now you know that its a grape container and the other is olives.
Of course, statistically, it would take a lot more than just 3 picks.

You can't choose an order or that would give it away. So in the end you will either have 2 containers with grapes or 2 with olives and one with the other.

2....
ong your first pick... you can tell which one has both because you will be eating a salty grape or a sweet olive... or if you pick a regular olive its olives, or a regular grape its grapes
the second pick identifies the 2nd container the same way, the the last container is labeled with process of elimination..
but... you cant choose an 'order' to taste them in, because you dont know what each is...
OR.. you can just dump them all into ONE container and label it 'grapes and olives' haha...

3 tastings. If you end up picked the mixed container first, and pull out 2 "items" and get one olive and one grape, you know that is the mixed one. Next you can taste either of the other jars and know if you get an olive, that's the olive jar, and the other is the grape jar (or vice versa).

You would need to know how many are in each. As you could conceivably chose only grapes or only olives from the mixed container, without knowing how many, you would need to keep eating until two containers are empty if you happened to chose the grapes or olives only first. Or eat until you have discovered it is mixed and then you only will need one additional tasting from one of the other jars.

you guys are forgetting that the containers are all mislabeled which is an important piece of info.
if you pick a grape first - the label must say it is either olive or mixed.
second pick from another - if also a grape it must also say either olive or mixed. from these two you can determine
