This is fairly common with dogs. The main cause is a lack of either protein or vitamin B. Vets have a liquid one can give to dogs that do this.

They just do it. Don't put anything on it or give your dog anything for it. Meat tenderizer will eat a hole in their stomach lining.
Pick it us ASAP. If it's not there, it can't happen. Feed a good quality food and have your vet check for parasites.

my friends vet told her that some dogs do this to get attention and some do it for a lack of something . I had a foster that did this I took care of it by putting cayenne pepper on it . She never ate it again . good luck .

I don't know, but my cousins dog does the same thing.
