I hope you have siblings who have planned thenm a nice party and you're the youngest who's just put it off. 50 is quite an accomplishment and they deserve a huge party and a special trip. As to a gift, go to the nearest "Things Remembered" store in the Mall. They will have some 50th anniversary gifts there you can have engraved IMMEDIATELY. I like clocks for a big occasion like this, they have bunches of other things too... Make sure to wrap it up nice in lots of GOLD paper with a 50th card!
I hope they have a very special day - they deserve it!

Well, maybe you shouldn't have waited until their anniversary was only a few days away. If you had planned ahead, you have asked some family members and close friends to help you plan (and pay for) a nice surprise party. It is their 50th anniversary, after all. How about sending them to a bed and breakfast somewhat nearby for a night or two (at their convenience) and include money for dinner or call ahead and have a bottle of champagne placed in their room beforehand? If you have siblings, you could split the cost. If that's too much, just send them out for a nice romantic dinner (give them like $50).

If you had more than a few days, I would suggest a photo book of their life together. Way to procrastinate!!
You could find a copy of their original wedding photo and make them an 8X10 with a pretty border or frame.
Or, get a double frame, and in one side put the wedding photo, and on the other, a photo of them on their 50th.
Sentimental gifts will probably be way more important to them than just something you go out and buy. I'm sure they have everything they need. You could also just write them a letter or poem telling them what great parents they have been.

A set of anniversary ring - it can be something in gold but a simple design since 50th is Golden Anniversary. Or, you can consider giving them a holiday gift voucher that they can book to go somewhere for a short break. If the above are too costly, you can even book them for one night in a nice local hotel that has 'honeymoon' package with all the frills!
Although giving them money will be a practical idea but it is not something memorable.

Instead of buying them a gift, why don't you make them a gift.
Make them a scrapbook with pictures throughout their life together. You can also make a DVD of pictures with music and everything. You could do it yourself but, if you aren't good at things like that, you can have it done for you without spending a ton of money. It's something that won't put you in debt but, it's super personal and it'd probably mean a lot to them.
Or you could throw them a party with all of their friends and the family. Have everybody that comes pitch in some money so you can send your parents off on a nice trip together. By doing this, they get a nice getaway but, you aren't out a couple thousand dollars.

Remeber When by Alan Jackson. My grandparents 50th Anniversary party is this August. That is the only song my grandfather searched everywhere to find for grandma! It's the first and probably only cd he will ever buy! We are throwing them a big party and that is the song they are dancing too for the first dance! We are also putting together alot of music from the 50's for the party.

maybe a gift certificate for a nice dinner and a massage (maybe a spa?) if you add a nice hotel room I could be perfect.
I don't know if you will have something similar where you live but here is a place where they offer nice dinner and a 1/2 massage for 39 Euros (Barcelona, Spain) per person.
Congratulate your parents, I hope it last another 50 years. Cheers.

Well, if you can find a picture of them from their wedding, you can get it blown up or reframed ir even painted, that may be nice, or just get them something nice like a silver platter with their names and 50th anniversary etched in to it. Something classic.
