The First Commandment forbids idolatry. Man commits idolatry whenever he honors and reveres a creature in place of God, whether this be gods or demons (for example, satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc.

In the lands that surrounded Israel, there were many who worshiped false gods including the Egyptians. Later the Jews had to deal with the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses worshiped by their Governors and occupying forces.

Today people put many things in front of God in their lives including money, status, self, power, etc.

These idols must be safely kept because being false idols they have no real power and can easily be taken from you.

With love in Christ.

So where else do you want to keep them??? Outside in the garden where they can get dirty. Being an Indian, you should know that we don't worship the idols. We worship god. The idols are there to give a structure to our worship, they are there to symbolise god not to constitute god. You sound like some stupid hinduphobic Muslim that can't stop making a mockery out of Hinduism. Get a life!

The worshippers uses the statue or idol to concentrate on their god. In doing so, they dress up those idols with diamonds and gold. If they don't lock it up, somebody will steal it. It is same in every worshipping place. You could see the same in a church, mosque or a synagogue.

Because out of love for God they don't want people to mess with them. IT is a mood of worship. Such as mother Yashoda (who plays the roll of Gods (Krishna's') Mother always tries to protect Him even though He is The Supreme God head and does not need protection. But her love for Him can not see this so she trays to protect Him. Also Their are rascals who have destroyed Deities in the temples. Though God is not subject to being destroyed. He gives them free will and lets them destroy the elements of the Deity, but God can not be Destroyed.
